.htaccess hotlink protection with a directory exception

Hi.  I wasn't exactly sure where I should have asked this but here it goes.  I want to disable hot-linking of images on my webhost.  The problem is, I would like a single directory (example: /public_html/pictures/) as an exception because I host my own signatures, avatars, etc for forums I visit, and often post pictures on those forums, and so it would be really convenient to be able to have an entire directory as an exception to the hotlinking protection, is this possible?

i do know that I can set certain domains as exceptions but that's just not controlled enough for me but if that's my only choice I guess i'll have to settle with that.

Thanks.
