The Little Guy
OK, here's the story: I was using my Plug and Play mouse I get up to help someone with something, come back move my mouse and its no longer working. I unplug it wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. I get the Error message "Device not Recognized" balloon. If I plug in my External Hard Drive, the HD's light comes on, but it doesn't show up in "My Computer", also I can feel the Drives inside it spinning. Anyone know how to fix this problem? ngreenwood6
Try restarting the computer. If that doesn't work try another usb port
The Little Guy
I restarted the computer 2 times, each time removing all power sources. It works in one port, but the other two... nothing.
corbin
Sounds like two bum USB ports.... Depending on what's wrong, there might not be a way to fix it.
.josh
That's a sure sign of an impending motherboard failure. I give your computer 1, 2 weeks tops, before it dies. Better call the make a wish foundation.
The Little Guy
OK, so I have a second hard drive. Last time I used that hard drive the port worked. After switching them and plugging the mouse back in to that port, I found that, that hard drive as well didn't recognize it. This brings me to the conclusion that it isn't Windows fault, its the ports.
Mchl
To be entirely sure it's not OS, try booting some linux from CD, and see if it sees those ports.
corillo181
my guess is that the usb was installed witht he wrong settings. right click mycomputer->manage->device manager->usb ports-> right click the usb with a question mark and uninstall it, than plug it back in. The Little Guy
my guess is that the usb was installed witht he wrong settings. right click mycomputer->manage->device manager->usb ports-> right click the usb with a question mark and uninstall it, than plug it back in. I have uninstalled all USB ports, and it's not working... 1. Click Start. Click Run. Type cmd and press OK. 2. Type “set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1″ (without quotation marks) and press Enter. 3. Type “set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1″ (without quotation marks) and Press Enter. 4. Type “start devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) and click press Enter. 5. Click View. Click Show hidden devices. 6. Click “+” to expand Imaging devices, Unknown devices and USB devices. 7. Are there any USB devices and unknown devices (including grayed out devices)? If so, please right click it and click Uninstall. Found Here: http://www.hat.net/geeky/node/221 my guess is that the usb was installed witht he wrong settings. right click mycomputer->manage->device manager->usb ports-> right click the usb with a question mark and uninstall it, than plug it back in. The Little Guy
Is it possible that my mouse is breaking the pins or something?
ngreenwood6
It sounds to me like the port just went bad. It happens just like anything can just stop working. If you are in need of usb ports you can buy either a usb hub which makes 1 port 4 ports or you can order a usb pci card and put it in the computer. aximbigfan
Do you have an extension cable hooked up to the USB device? I had the same problem. It was caused by a USB extension cable. Chris
