Hello,

Can someone please tell me if meta tag keywords need apostrophes around multiple word keywords?

ex.

<meta name="keywords" content="key, words, 'more than one word', is, 'this right'" />

or no need?:

<meta name="keywords" content="key, words, more than one word, is, this right" />

The <meta name="keywords"> tag is obsolete apparently, as this 'keywords' meta tag was abused to no end. Developers would insert extremely high ranking keywords that have no relevance to their site for the simple (and devious) purpose of driving more traffic. From what I understand, spiders now ignore this completely.

As a result, we can safely omit this tag altogether.. the <meta name="description"> tag is still relevant however.

Upon learning of all this not too long ago, I'll have to go through and remove the keyword tags from my own pages.

EDIT - In accordance to this wikipedia article, apparently Yahoo still makes use of the keyword aspect, but I don't think the other search egine services support it.

This thread is more than a year old. Please don't revive it unless you have something important to add.
