I love ubuntu. It is my first linux love and i'll be sticking with it for a while :) The software store is awesome and the updater is slick. Plus I only use it for web development, so Komodo+Remote Drive Plugin, Chrome+Dev Console, and Pidgen are all I really need. I have it running on a 1.86 single core with 2 gigs of ram and an 80gig sata, and it is really fast.

Of course now that I finally got around to buying a power supply for my macbook, it may take a vacation :P

I can recommend either. I started using Ubuntu as my main operating system a couple years ago. I recently switched my desktop from Gnome to KDE and I'm liking it.

But still, I don't thing you can go wrong with either.

yup right all above are fine with ubuntu. but how would you solve the space problem? The lack of space which prevents the installation of digital tuner cards.

No one has mentioned a requirement for digital tuner cards... Besides, you'd just throw in another hard drive.

With regards to the original question - I've been using Ubuntu properly since 6.06 and I have no issues with it. I run it on almost all of my "desktop" machines, and all of my servers.
