Convert eregi to PHP 5 valid reference of stristr?

Can someone help me convert this into a PHP 5 valid code? It looks like I would use stristr but looking at php.net it seems like there is something else I should change.

if (eregi("^([0-9a-f]{2})([0-9a-f]{2})([0-9a-f]{2})([0-9a-f]{2})$", $parts[1], $regs)) {

str(i)str is for regular string matching. You need more than that. You need regular expressions. You need preg_match.

You can use the exact same expression as you have there, except with a /.../i added around it.
