This is what I load in the head of my index.php

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="js_functions.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

this is part of index.php

<div id="output">
</div>

 

In the js_function.js the following works

$(document).ready(
  function () {
    alert('The document is ready.');
  }
); 

or

$(document).click(
  function () {
    alert('The document is ready.');
  }
);

 

However the following does not.

$("#output").click(
  function () {
    alert('The document is ready.');
  }
);

Wrap your code in the document.ready part.

Then try putting some content in your div so you can actually click on it.

No, that's how you're SUPPOSED to do jquery.
