Why MySQL uses this syntax?

In other programming languages and DBMS, strings are typically represented by either a ' sign or a " sign. In contrast to MySQL, these two sign are not used to represent a string. The ` sign is curiously used. This is in my opinion very uncommon in the programming world. Also in speaking languages (English, German for example) this sign is uncommon.

Which reasons had led to this decision?
