freelance84
I noticed on the Announcements board a down time notice due to an update of the phpFreaks server. My learning curve into the world of web design, front end and back end has been fairly steep and all thanks to this forum, it has been quite literally my bible to the world of php, css and js and as a result i am very familiar with this site. Im trying to get a handle on servers, ie what size server is adequate for any given amount of traffic. After phoning around a few dedicated server providers a lot were very vague (understandably so, asking what size server one should get is like asking how long is a piece of string). Never the less having at least a bit of an idea would be nice start... I was wondering, would any of the administrators be kind enough to let me know what kind of traffic hits phpFreaks on a monthly or weekly basis... ie, what is the amount of data passed and to roughly how many visitors? Also (appologies for the multi q post), the following was the posted spec of the servers: Old server: cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 15 model name : (as you might have guessed this is yet another new field for me )
freelance84
Also, if anyone else would be kind enough to say what the spec. of their server is with the amount of traffic against and how well your site is performing speed wise to the end user... ZulfadlyAshBurn
Server are usually based on your website usage. If you are running video streaming site, you most probably need a few servers running with load balancer, if yours is just a family site, you might just want to use your existing comp minimum p4 chips and apache/xampp/wamp running. I am currently using a core 2 due server with apache server installed. Quite happy with it although sometimes it hangs when i'm sharing videos around the world. freelance84
Cool ok thanks... I have an idea for a site though which would require some large volumes of download and uploading. I am trying gauge and idea on what investment might be needed and one cost i really have very little idea about is the server. I am self taught, have run a few small sites inc a family site but nothing really too big.
ZulfadlyAshBurn
you might want to host a cloud/dedicated server. they are usually much faster and not forgetting, you would need a cdn.
