connecting to database problem in xampp

This connection is producing the following error:

ok...but if I use the same snippet of code, but direct it to another database it connects (and outputs) fine.

That database probably allows the root user to have access, while this one doesn't.

These are the current privileges:

 

User Host Type Privileges Grant Action

root linux global ALL PRIVILEGES Yes Edit Privileges

root localhost global ALL PRIVILEGES Yes Edit Privileges

 

All boxes are checked.
