Why Is Posting Source Code So Difficult?

Recently I tried posting the following snippet:

I spent time aligning all of the pieces by inserting/deleting white spaces and... everything is still messed up more or less. Why?

If you're using the WYISWYG editor, the font is not monospaced - which will make it look completely different from when it is posted using the code tag.
