He could be trying to make a site plugin that modifies the site. There's plenty of them that add new functions, remove ads, etc. I don't know how to do it with a Chrome ext. though, only Firefox or plain JS in a GM script. I don't know if Chrome can even do it without GM scripts. (Tampermonkey will provide the missing GM functions).
