I parse from JSON (api) and echo strings, but my code is echoing something extra

I get funny result from my * echo $item['text']; *

I do get the strings I intend to.
Eg. I would like to have or sholud get the result:

But instead I get

Thank you for your help. Looks better. But the "Recomended" is not the name. it should go  further on tto "venues" in the json. there is the name I need.

Ok, Remove  echo '<li><b>' . ucwords($group['name']) . '</b></li>';

 

Then add  echo '<li><b>' . $item['venue']['name'] . '</b></li>';  before  foreach($item['tips'] as $tip)

As long as $group['lastname'] has been trimmed, you should get the first letter with that.

Could also do $group['lastname'][0]

The use of curly braces for accessing a character of a string still works

$str = 'abc';
echo $str{0};    //--> a

However, I haven't seen that notation used since PHP 3, last century, and nowadays it is usual to use normal array notation

$str = 'abc';
echo $str[0];   //-> a
