help with _GET, assigning to variable and checking that variable

I'm trying to GET from a URL, and

IF index.php?preselect=testing

THEN $preselect_command = 'this is a command...'

Why, no matter what I put in the index.php?preselect='WHATEVER' I always get "this is a command..." to echo?

I know I'm missing something!

if (isset($_GET['preselect'])) { // Check to see if preselect is set in the url.
    $preselect = $_GET['preselect']; // if preselect is set, put it to my variable
 } else {
   $preselect = NULL; // Fallback to null if it's not set
}

if ($preselect = 'testing') { // if $preselect equals "testing" then, $preselect_command = some text 'this is a command...'.
$preselect_command = 'this is a command...';
}

else {
echo "something else...";
}

echo $preselect_command;
  • Solution

Single = to assign, double == to compare if equal, triple === to compare if equal and also same type
