Saving variables in a database

This is probably the most complex thing I've done yet... :p

Basically what I want is to retrieve a users IP, and field they submit via a form, then save it to a database where it can be later viewed by me.

I've never used databases with any php script that I've created, so i don't really know where to start, and I really want to learn how to do it, not just do it.

Any starting links, reccomendations, tips would be great!

Thank you.
