Hi, what im trying to do is allow a user to upload their pictures using an online GUI, however as the images are being uploaded and saved to the server i would like to reduce the file size some what.  The reason for doing this is to save on download times and disc space alike.  I know how to temporarily change the image size as the image file is actually being called, however this is not permanent and the image file size is never actually changed and thus disc space is not being saved.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how i can do this?

thanks a lot!

I know you can use GD to do this on a jpg (jpeg) format. I use this function to create thumbnails to display

function thumb_jpeg($image_name,$source_path,$destination_path){
//Create Thumbnail
    $new_width=150;  //Image width Change if needed
    $new_height=150;  //Image height Change if needed
    $destimg=ImageCreate($new_width,$new_height) or die("Problem In Creating image");
    $srcimg=ImageCreateFromjpeg($source_path.$image_name) or die("Problem In opening Source Image");
    ImageCopyResized($destimg,$srcimg,0,0,0,0,$new_width,$new_height,ImageSX($srcimg),ImageSY($srcimg)) or die("Problem In resizing");
    Imagejpeg($destimg,$destination_path.$image_name) or die("Problem In saving");
}

If you use the GD library to resize the images down to a manageable viewable size, this will help. Next, you can use imagejpeg() to determine the quality of the image. You can reduce the quality of an uploaded image to about 70-80%, and you will reduce the file size somewhat, too.
