PHP 4 Vs. 5

I'll be honest, I have no idea what version I'm using... What's the best way to find out what I'm on with my server and how do I establish what I'm using to program with? I just see it as a language that either works or doesn't... perhaps that's a bad way to be?

make a php file with this in it:

phpinfo();
?>

 

it should mention the PHP version near the top somewhere.

Cool thanks. But that only tells me what the server's running right? Is PHP 5 backward compatible?
