hello;

I have just installed apache/php/mysql/phpmyadmin on my pc;

I want to copy my webhost directory onto my local machine for local testing;

PROBLEM: when I download my mysql databses from my webhost, they are delivered to me as either tar.gz or .sql, BUT my local mysql directory is only recognizing .frm files;

any thoughts??

thanks for your time

Actually just read your post again. You shouldn't be simply downloading your database files, you need to export your database to an sql dump, from there its easy to import the dump back into your local db.

that worked;

it's a little bit stressful though that I seem to REQUIRE phpmyadmin to do all of the work

( ie export the .sql on the webhost side and subsequently import the .sql  on my local machine - which in turn generates .frm, .MYD, .MYI files within my apache_server/...  directory);

I am left not actually knowing: what is a mysql file? .. is it a .frm?? is it a .sql?? is it a .sql that is processed by phpmyadmin??

but nevertheless, by using the phpmyadmin to IMPORT the .sql file, it works;

thanks
