How Google Has Screwed over Webmasters - Florida Update Rant
phpfreak replied to phpfreak's topic in Miscellaneous
I don\'t even think that\'s the half of it. I really find this whole deal disturbing. We only hope that our readers will find interest in their ads on our site and push their mouse button them, otherwise this site may not succeed. -
I don\'t know how many of you are into the whole Google scene, nor am I sure how many are Search Engine Optimizers (as we all should be), but how many of you have been hurt by this Florida update? What kills me the most is that Google has taken away from the serious webmasters out there who earn money to sustain their websites. For example, phpfreaks.com has lost over 50% of it\'s advertising revenue over the last month due to Google\'s way of doing things. It used to be that other webmasters could purchase links on big sites like this one, to help drive traffic to their sites. Now, with the way that Google has changed it\'s algorithm, many advertisers have flipped out and run away scared. My thinking of this is \"why?\" Why would google try to hurt the webmasters such as us that do nothing but build their search engines for them by bringing massive amounts of content to thier database and making them only more popular? The answer is greed. Google apparently wanted to drive as much of the advertising from webmaster\'s sites into it\'s own pocket by forcing all of these advertisers to get no effect by advertising anywhere other than on Google\'s own Adwords program. Basically, this means alot of sites are in trouble. We can only hope that the new Yahoo search engine or Alltheweb or even the new upcoming Microsoft search engine can overtake Google\'s popularity. I get this fealing from reading tons of posts on the \"Florida Update\". Webmasterworld.com has over 2,000 posts regarding this entire topic and many people have talked about avoiding Google all together as their search results are starting to decline along with their support for webmasters. So, what can we do? Nothing. Google doesn\'t care about us, nor do they even want to hear from us regarding this entire issue. About the only thing that would get Google\'s attention is to gather webmasters around the world and have them add an exlusion rule into their robots.txt file and disallow the Googlebots to their websites. When the Googlebot has been banned from hundreds of high-powered websites, maybe that\'ll get Google\'s attention. However, we all know that to make a movement like this, it would mean that all the people involved would have to take a traffic hit, and we also know that they wouldn\'t want to do this. The monopoly has one once again ruled and dictated how we do things. Webmasters who used to earn revenue to run their sites, are now forced to use something like Google\'s Adsense (which is a huge consipracy theory right now) just to make a few bucks and help offset the costs nowdays. So, now that we are using Adsense as a tie-over for the next best thing, we are dicated by Google on how our site should be operated. If you have ever run Adsense and been contacted by Google about modifiying your site\'s content, you\'ll understand what I mean by this. They contact you and hold your earnings over your heads and tell you that your site must be altered in order to remove the temporary suspension from your adsense account. They dictate how you as a webmaster operate your site and tell you what you can and cannot say. It\'s pathetic. Another thing I have learned over the past two years dealing with Search Engine Optimiziers is that wembasters litteraly fear how Google is going to rank their sites. We shouldn\'t have to worry about this kind of crap. You as a wembaster, should worry about making your site better and have more features instead of trying to tweak your site to get ranked highly. You should not have to worry about Google\'s secrets and worry about why your site was ranked #1 last month and now is non-existant in the search engine rankings. As you read this, you may or may not relate to it. But trust me, I\'ve spent quite a long time on the phones with some of our advertisers trying to smooth over something that I don\'t even fully understand (Google\'s madness). If you\'re interested, here\'s a couple of interesting articles about this Florida Update: An Excellent article: http://www.webworkshop.net/florida-update.html Another one: http://www.searchengineguide.com/lloyd/200...3/1125_bl1.html And : http://www.searchengineposition.com/info/n...oridaupdate.asp This is a sad era for webmasters around the world. I know of a few fellow PHP sites that are feeling the same effect and getting hurt like this as well. This is my rant. These are only my opinions based on what I have seen and read. You are welcome to comment to this if you would like. Thanks.

Important: PHP Freaks.com Needs Your Help!
phpfreak replied to phpfreak's topic in Apache HTTP Server
I don\'t think it\'s necessary to click multiple times a day. Just click when you can. Most companies that look at advertising, take a look at sales during a specified campaign. We can show them magical click through rates, but if their sales didn\'t improve, they will not renew their ad campaign. It\'s no longer a big issue. We\'re doing fine now. -
Is apache running? Can you give us some more information. Are you trying to load the default index.php page? If so, edit the DIRECTORYINDEX section of the httpd.conf file and add the index.php to that. Take a look at this tutorial. It\'s linux tutorial, but there\'s some basic setup for editing the configuration file there you may find useful: http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/12/2.php

Here\'s a little something I like to do. I create a file named \"index.php\" and inside it, I put the following code: [php:1:6b964ba1b8]<?php header(\"Location /.\"); ?>[/php:1:6b964ba1b8] Then, I place this file in every directory of my website that I don\'t want people listing the contents for. It will automatically redirect them to the index of the site. Good luck!

How long has your domain name been active?

i can view my localhost but nobody is able to view my site
phpfreak replied to sumday's topic in Apache HTTP Server
Hi, I don\'t think this has anything to do with your httpd.conf file. Here\'s a couple of things I would look at: 1.) Are you running a firewall preventing port 80 2.) Does your ISP prevent port 80 access? 3.) How are other people trying to access your site? Did you give them the IP address or are you using some sort of dynamic DNS? Those questions may help you solve your problem. -
If you are using CPanel, I would contact your web hosting provider and ask them what the username and password is. Chances are, it\'s the same as your login. It might be [email protected] for the username and your CPanel password.
-
If you haven\'t changed anything from the default installation, use the username: root and no password. Good luck!

Providing a site backup / export feature like in PhpMyAdmin?

Hi everyone, I have removed any posts regarding the War on Iraq. This is not the place to be discussing political views and I really do not want to see it here. Here at PHP Freaks.com we have people from all over the world viewing our website each day. They are here for help on PHP and MySQL and web related topics. I do not want any political views or protesting done on my website. I apologize if this saddens you, but we simply can not have it. If you reply to this thread, please do not post your views on the WAR. If you really must discuss this, find a chat room or a discussion board somewhere else and discuss it there. Sincerely,

You need to ensure that you either reload or restart MySQL after adding users, changing database permissions or passwords. Reload MySQL and give it another shot

using apache to host my own website...
phpfreak replied to sorcerer980's topic in Apache HTTP Server
Check this out, it may help: http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/24/0.php -
Yes, common sense to me would tell me to replace that path to the directory where I want the backup to be stored. Also, please read the tutorial for the cron tab. It tells you how to use a CGI version of PHP as well as lynx to access your php script. Thanks,
-
You could use my Backup Utility: http://www.phpfreaks.com/script/view/11.php Alternatively, I would create a PHP script to do this. Something like this: [php:1:6356097178]<?php $filename = \"mysqldb\".time().\".sql\"; passthru(\"mysqldump -u (username) -p(password) --opt (database_name) > /my/backup/directory/$filename\"); ?>[/php:1:6356097178] Then using my PHP CRON Tutorial, you can set it up on a CRON TAB. http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/28/0.php Good luck.
-
You\'ll have to force it with header(); header(\"Content-type: application/octet-stream\"); header(\"Location: http://mysite.com/my.mp3\"); The reason why is that some browsers and operating systems like Windows for examples thinks that MP3 should stream. So, when you click on the URL, it wants to stream it. Keep in mind, you\'ll have to create a seperate script for this and pass the URL as a variable.

Question RE: .htaccess file and redirect
phpfreak replied to simonlebon's topic in Apache HTTP Server
What version of Apache are you running? There was this \"forward slash bug\" awhile back that was giving these kinds of problems. It sounds like a simple misconfiguration in your apache config files if you are running an up to date version of Apache. -
Hello, I am going to try and reach out for our audience to help us keep phpfreaks.com going. We\'re looking for you as a viewer of our site to help us tremendously by doing a very very simple task. We do not want your money, we want something that\'s even easier and doesn\'t cost you a thing. How can you help PHP Freaks.com? Click on the banners. That\'s it. If you like the product that you are viewing, either buy it or sign up for it if it\'s free. We\'re very selective on advertisers and we don\'t want to advertise things that you as a webmaster/developer would not be interested in. Some of these companies have really great services. Let me share a few statistics with you. Today is October 9th 2002. This month (October alone) in the last 9 days, we\'ve displayed 107613 web banners on our websites at the time of writing this topic. (This is about 5 different graphics displayed numerous times) and we\'ve had 223 clicks for a Click Thru Rate (CTR) of 0.21%. That\'s not very good. We seriously need to bring that up or we\'ll lose our advertisers and eventually have to close shop. The key to our finances on this website are advertising. Advertising keeps our website financed and keeps our server costs paid for as well as maintenance. That\'s the way over 50% or more of websites on the web stay in business, especially if they have their own web servers. We\'re doing our best to not let our advertising campaigns get in your way. We\'ve designated a couple of small spots on our websites to run banner ads and we do not use a \"POP-UP\" type web banner which is very annoying. We\'re hoping that our community and our readers can help us stay in business by satisfying the companies who are paying for advertising to cover our costs involved in running a huge website like this. I think I\'ve said enough. Please help us. It doesn\'t cost you anything unless you choose to buy something. Thanks!
