  1. try the DOCUMENT_ROOT: <? include($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/includes/userData.inc.php'); ?>
  2. I don't see any reason this code would not work on a cronjob... you should call PHP first then the script: /usr/local/bin/php /path/to/phpfile.php
  3. Haha.. nice.. at least he put it in the "Misc" forum...
  4. I would also recommend jQuery in Action - if you're getting into Javascript - jQuery has a very nice platform for you to work with. Of course you'll need to know Javascript basics - but jQuery really helps enhance your site with a toolbox of excellent functions. http://www.amazon.com/jQuery-Action-Second-Bear-Bibeault/dp/1935182323/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295113831&sr=8-1
  5. I think you should consider an AJAX callback on your Javascript confirmation. You can write a script that detects when the user wants to close the window using window.close() then do a dialog confirmation - if the user clicks "Ok" to close the window, do a quick ajax call to a backend script that simply updates the timestamp in the database. I hope that general idea helps..
  6. I have edited this to remove your API and Secret keys - you should not post these publicly as someone could use those to cause havoc on your facebook app...
  7. The ?page=usersonline is called an argument - you pass arguments into your script and then call the relevant actions based on those arguments...
  8. Webhost Freaks - owned by PHPFreaks.com can assist you if needed: http://www.WebHostFreaks.com - all hosting sales go in direct support of PHPFreaks and our continued operation of this site. We can parse .html files as PHP as well. Thanks and Good Luck on your coding adventures.
  9. By the way... UltraEdit just came out for Mac OSX... this was my favorite editor on Windows... switching over to Mac, I ended up using Zend Studio and don't care for it much, but UltraEdit's file / server browser kind of sucks on Mac so I'm sticking with Zend for now
  10. Kick some ass!! over 80% of all my e-mail is spam that I delete!
  11. Hey everyone, I wanted to stop by and say Merry Christmas to all! Thanks for using PHP Freaks and being part of the community. Good things are ahead for 2011! Peace!
  12. Have you checked with the documentation at all? Usually that's your best place to get installation instructions on specialized scripts like this.
  13. Haha... Yeah my avatar is pretty crazy, watch out or it will eat your reply! Have a good one, thanks for the chuckle!
  14. It's possible to do so, but is it practical at this time? As I said, the advertising programs need to spider the content they will be serving ads on and it's specific to the URL - this is how they keep track of which ads to display (until recently with Google's Remarketing).
  15. Thanks CV - I appreciate your post, and I agree with you. Let's put together some ideas to bring the life back into the front side (not only forums) of this site. I'm all ears/eyes!
  16. It's not disabled, but it may be out of date. We need to do an upgrade on the forums, which will be done soon. Hopefully that will make it work again.
  17. Hi Everyone, Lately we have been messing around with a new front end that we're thinking about porting over to PHPFreaks with some modifications. This front end is called "Social Engine" and is written using Zend Framework. Our front end right now is excellent, but we're considering options to get people more involved and interacting with the site. This Social Engine looks like a great start, but we would like your input before going crazy and doing all the work. We started up a test site called "Geeks Aholic" to test out the software and do some coding on it. If we like what we see on the back end and you like the front end - perhaps we will make the switch. Please check out http://geeksaholic.com and grab an account and test out the features. Some of the really cool things like "Groups" and "Chat" are the features we found most interesting - however this thing operates and looks almost identical to Facebook - so with that kind of change, feedback would be welcome before we attempt it. Again, please check out the front end on http://geeksaholic.com - grab an account and post something - we will integrate the software (on phpfreaks.com domain name) with our existing forums here so that nothing will be lost, provided we get some support. SocialEngine has already donated a license to PHPFreaks, so this won't cost us anything but some time. It's either Sink or Swim against the social networks out there, and this is a good way to start trying to swim. Thanks for your feedback!
  18. Hi Everyone, thanks for your input. There's a couple reasons why ads are tested live on the main site. 1) In order for most ads to work these days, especially adsense - the content has to be on a live site and it has to be able to be spidered by google's MediaBots to determine which ads to display. 2) I don't have access to a public testing server where I can modify the ads and test them where google can spider them and determine the best ads 3) I don't really want to hack around too much in SMF right now (our forum software) because the software needs an update. I've tried my best to leave the ad format where it's at. I can't disclose how much google pays us, but it's nothing to rave about and frankly I'm disappointed that a site like this doesn't get relevant ads from Google or any other source. I'm doing the best I can over here, and until we find something that works, I will keep looking. However, I'm only modifying the content inside the ad blocks that are already here. The latest run with AdBrite wasn't paying very well either, and those were the takeover ads and the dog food ads. Both which have been disabled and now we're back to adsense. I can't ask you to click the banners, and I can't encourage you to check them out, so with that kind of limitation, Advertising is kind of a trick to get to work for your site. It's a situation where I'm trying to find out what's best for the community and my only environment to really test it now is through the live server using the pre-defined ad blocks and SMF's Ad Management system. As of right now, until something magical comes along, we're pretty much stuck with this form of advertising - less intrusive and less effective. I will see what I can do to move some of the ad blocks around to be higher up in the posts and closer to what people are reading (Thanks Dan). Have a good one everybody!
  19. takeover ads are now gone... What's getting depressing is that each time we try something new, nothing but complaints come about it. At some point, we're all going to have to find a happy medium where #1 this site can make enough to sustain itself and help for future growth in development and #2 The complaining and bitching about Advertisements stops. Either way, doesn't seem like we can find one, so what are we suppose to do?
  20. The takeover ads are only suppose to be displayed once every 6 hours and after 3 page impressions. Again, something I'm testing and frankly it's not worth the hassle.
  21. Hi Dan! Well, it was just a really bad context sensitivity in my opinion.. I switched us over to AdBrite with a Google Adsense backup banner and last night it wasn't showing any inline (text link) ads.. I didn't realize until this morning that it was showing Dog Treat ads. I was not impressed with this and have disabled it.. Bummer. I understand what devshed and other sites are going through right now. With Social Networks sucking in all the traffic these days, we have to find better ways to keep our sites funded. Adsense has been mostly irrelevant lately and I'm very disappointed with that. I'm giving AdBrite a try and I'm also welcome to any suggestions for other non-intrusive but relevant ads. Please let me know what you have in mind! Thanks!
  22. Hey folks, sorry about the "Dog Treat Ads" - that bothers me as well, I'm working on disabling them now and hopefully we won't see any more of that nonsense here.. I was really hoping by switching to a different ad provider we could find some more relevant ads than before... I'm working on it, nothing is permanent, so please be patient.
