1.
You'd need a zip code database, and then some functions to calculate the distance. Here is the database I use: http://www.micahcarrick.com/v2/content/view/4/22/ It looks like they have added a class for working with the distances too, so that should help.
Hey, that's a nice class. Nice find there!
2. Here's some history for ya! http://www.cafepress.com/buy/phpfreaks/-/pv_design_prod/p_storeid.3104070/pNo_3104070/id_1276052/opt_/pg_/c_/fpt_ That's an oooold logo. Not sure if many would remember that!
3. I've used one for one of our clients, its not too bad, but if you look in Google how many documents are stored on this site, its pretty scary. I don't know if even the 100,000 document one would be enough for us: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Awww.phpfreaks.com&btnG=Google+Search At one time, we had over 600,000 pages indexed in google. Ouch...
4.
Eric, thanks for the dedicated server (at least, I assume it is dedicated based on your post) for the community! I, for one, have noticed a marked improvement in performance than what I had seen over the last few months. Thanks for striving to keep the place running smoothly. I offer once again, as so many have: if there is anything more we can do to help you out, please let me know!
obsidian, Yes, we put it on a dedicated server all by itself. The site is doing good with the Google Ads and we are able to afford the server allocation for it. We also plan in the next month or two to purchase a Google Mini for PHP Freaks. Its something we're considering, so it may or may not happen. More info: http://www.google.com/mini
5. As I stated in my original post, we are aware of things such as mods not working and the header being goofed up. it's not necessary to point those out. If you run into something strange or unusual, then please post here and let us know.
6. Yeah you can thank those bastards out there who like to set loose their little content downloading programs to try and save ALL of our content to their hard drives. They have no common sense and they do not use any kind of throttling when they do that. This causes the servers to become overloaded and bogged down. We've moved PHP Freaks to its own server today (as of 5 minutes ago) so hopefully the problems will get better.
7. Howdy folks, We've upgraded the PHP Freaks forums to SMF 1.1.1 (Latest). There may be a few odd things for a day or two until our site admins can get in there and fix the themes. Please be patient and report any critical problems here. Regards,
8. For those who have reported, I do apologize for the delay, but we've fixed the Lost Password recovery feature for the main site - NOT THE FORUMs -  the forums one wasn't broken, but people did submit e-mails about trying to get their passwords from the main site. You should be all set now. Thanks,
9.
Eric, I just wanted to take a minute and say "Thank You" for this site.  It's one of my favorites and I've found it SO helpful in my efforts to learn PHP.  I'm sure it takes a LOT of work on your part (as well as all the mods).
Hey, don't thank me, thank the Mods and Admins! If it weren't for them, the site would have been gone a long time ago. I just built it and pay the bills :) You're welcome!
10.
well whatever eric did, I have not had a single timeout, too many connections, etc.. error, since he did it.
We had some major issues with the XML feeds. Our old XML feeds were dynamically driven, meaning they pull from the database and export the XML on the fly. The issue is that now so many programs can allow you to read XML feeds right in your e-mail clients such as Thunderbird, and this is a cool feature, but it was driving up our connections and apache processes on the sites and was killing the server. We turned them off last week and I had a chance to write a caching function for them today. Now the XML feeds are updated via CRON and at a set interval. Read this post: http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php/topic,117319.0.html
11. Hey, I just wanted to drop in and let everyone know that we've improved our XML feeds. We were having a problem with the server getting overloaded due to the amount of pull on our XML feeds, so we've written a caching system for them. In addition, when we switched over to SMF, we never had an XML feed for it. The forums XML feed was going to the old Invision Board database (doh!). Here's the feeds and how often they are updated: News Articles - 60 Minutes http://www.phpfreaks.com/feeds/articles.xml Tutorials - 60 Minutes http://www.phpfreaks.com/feeds/tutorials.xml Quick Code Library - 60 Minutes http://www.phpfreaks.com/feeds/quickcode.xml PHP Freaks Discussions (comments posted around the main site) - 5 Minutes http://www.phpfreaks.com/feeds/comments.xml Forums - 2 Minutes http://www.phpfreaks.com/feeds/forums.xml You can add these to your RSS syndicator such as Thunderbird or Opera, etc...
12. There were some issues with our RSS feeds and people hitting them so often that it took the site down at times. We're looking into some caching options to make this better, for now the RSS feeds are disabled the site is loading fine and Apache isn't failing...
13. Hi, We once did this at cafe press and it didn't do so well. You are more than welcome to brand our logo and print shirts and stuff, just don't turn a big profit without kicking something back to us :)
14.
perhaps YOU can explain haha.  EGO RUB:  i just know you pretty much brought this community up (at least initially) on your own, founded the hosting companies to support it, etc.  that is, that's what i've gathered from my years here, and by no means are you now alone (i need to give a nod to the other admins and mods that help out).  any retrospective/corrective comments to offer?  even I have "remember when.."s about phpfreaks, and i've neither been around from the beginning nor have made huge contributions toward it.
Andrew, Yes, if it were not for the Moderators and the Admins, this site would not function. I hate to say it, but I simply do not have the time to hang out here as much as I would like to these days. All of the mods and admins have really done this community a great service and without them, this place would be a mess.
15.
ie. eric, the one-man hosting machine
Humm... that sounds like an ego rub :) Please explain yourself. hehehe...
16.
Pssh... I'm here for the money.  Admins make $32.75/hr + bonuses and benefits.  And we're given flying pigs for transportation to and from work.  Booya. ;) EDIT: On a side note, there has been some new code added to the site that states that if you don't donate within the next 3.5 days, your account will be terminated and we'll request back-pay for the bandwidth you've eaten up on this site.  And you probably also missed the fact in the TOS that said we constantly download and upload large files in the background while you surf the forums.  So... that's gonna be a hefty bill. EDIT2: Can anyone else tell I'm on a sugar high?
sugar high my ass, sounds like you drank a 24 pack of Red Bull!
17. is it locked? hahaha :) Oh wait, I'm an Admin :P
18. We tried the Donation button on each post. It was red, and it was right next to the Reply button. You know how many donations we got? Like maybe $10 / month if we were lucky.  This is a fickle community when it comes to providing any kind of financial support to keeping the site going, therefore we have decided just to do what we can, and at this time it's Google AdSense because nobody else is going to help cover the bills.
19. Nah, we're keeping them as they are. Its part of the site's history.
20.
I believe that they are working on it as I think the entire main site is being rebuild or something like that.
You are always welcome to apply and become an author to write new tutorials. This site is based on user contributions. I simply do not have the time to write tutorials anymore and I only hope someone can pick up where we left off and start helping with putting fresh new content up.
21. A Connection Reset message means something in the content you were trying to post triggered our Intrusion Prevention System. There's a whole topic on this in the @phpfreaks forums.
22. A click is when you click on the link, an impression is when someone loads a page that has the ad on it.
23.
Added an acception to Adblock to preventy it from removing adds from phpfreaks.com Didnt notice the ads where added until I saw this thread. I will click on the adds a every so often that intrest me. I wont go OTT of course. ;)
Thanks, our contract is per impressions, not per click. So thanks for unblocking them :)
24.
And remember to click on them :P
Only if it interests you ;)
