apt-get autoremove selects half of all packages installed?

I did something stupid when messing with that horrid aptitude interface, dunno what exactly... That UI sucks and for a recently converted Windows user it is hell. I tried to access the menu with the keyboard, something happened, everything turned purple (sounds like a bad trip.. I swear I haven't touched the shrooms, honest ).

 

Anyway, apparently, now half of the installed packages are marked obsolete:

Actually, it's not a server. I'm trying to move my home development machine from Windows XP to Ubuntu. I'm trying to do all administration through the console, because that's all I get on my VPS too. Best to avoid too much convenience, or I'll never really learn.

 

The local server stuff was the easiest. Got apache, php, mysql, mysql tools and Zend Studio up and running in no time (that I know how to do). I also managed to install VMWare Server, though it has an annoying keyboard issue: somehow the Gnome panels are no longer handling/receiving any keyboard input and application shortcuts (such as CTRL-T in Firefox) stop working. After a restart of the whole machine (stopping the VM doesn't do it) everything works proper again. I also can't get my Canon MP510 to work properly. So still some work to do on that front.

 

I also haven't been able set up Samba yet, but I'll have to get to that later. For now I'll just SCP the files.

Thats exactly what i did to start out. I used flux box as a desktop for a few years without even installing a filemanager. Did everything via xterm.

No worries, if this is a home (desktop) pc, the packages listed are more understandable. Yes, thats the only reason I wanted to see dpkg -l, I thought this was a server.

 

Ive not used vmware so not sure what the issue there is, obviously its taking over the keyboard somehow.

 

Printers can be a pita in Linux, Ive a MP610 working in debian no problems though. I might have some interesting links on setting up up I'll post when I get home.

 

Ive never needed samba, but I'm setting up a couple of servers at the meoment (one windows, rhel) and yeah, samba is working but the perms are being a pita too.

I had this same problem before and spent a long time trying to figure out what was going on. I ended up giving up and went with VirtualBox. IMHO, virtualbox out performs vmware by ten fold and is much easier to use.

I used KDE on OpenSuSE and Fedora - though I hardly used that last one. I'm used to yast, hence my struggles with apt and consorts. Though I wasn't too skilled with SuSE either, tbh.

 

Anyway, I think I like Gnome better, not sure why. Probably because of it's simplicity compared to KDE, though it seems pretty similar.
