For mission-critial tasks, should have a backup server?

My server runs raid, so if a hard drive fails I have a backup. I have a backup power supply too.

I'm worried the motherboard could fail though - if it does, I'd be server-less until I could order a replacement and fix the server. I don't *think* this is an issue for he processors - can I run a dual process motherboard with only one processor? I don't know - and that's why I'm nervous.

I'm thinking of buying a new server, so that, in the event of horrible failure, I can switch the hard drives, be back online, and then fix the other server without having to rush.

Is this smart or overkill? I know motherboards don't fail all that often, and would think server motherboards would fail less -- I'm not sure the best, practical way to avoid downtime.

Be careful, if your mobo fails and your stupid enough to run windows as a server, you may find that you will have to drop the exact same motherboard in there for the windows installation to work as it did.

This does not always apply, but when it does, the only work around is to 'repair' windows this could be extremely problematic.

Do you keep your OS and data on the same disk?
