apt is the back end.

aptitude is the front gui end.

To be honest, there are only 4-5 apt* commands, so I know them off.

For a beginner user on the cmdline, aptitude will provide an interface for all package options.

I go with apt. ( http://wiki.kartbuilding.net/index.php/How_to_obtain_Packages_using_APT )

So aptitude just has the option to get menus.  So, what I really wanted to know is that there is absolutely no difference in running these two commands

aptitude install someprogram

apt-get install someprogram

I just see a mix of people using one or the other in that same format.
