Daniel0
Yeah, if you think about it then if you split something up an infinite amount of times, then there is nothing left (a.k.a. zero). corbin
Hrmmm.... Idk.... By that theory... 10 * (1/inf) * inf = 0? (Parenthesis just for looks.) 10 * (0) * inf = 0. Or: 10 * 1 / inf * inf 10 / inf * inf = 0 But.... 1/x * x/1 always = 1, yes? Or does infinity just break every rule? (I should just read the wiki on infinity and stop arguing against things known to be true ;p.) Daniel0
10 * (1/inf) * inf = 0? (Parenthesis just for looks.) 10 * (0) * inf = 0. Or: 10 * 1 / inf * inf 10 / inf * inf = 0 The results of all that is undefined because you cannot multiply 0 with infinity. GingerRobot
I'm pretty sure the way we were shown that 0.9999.. = 1 was something along the lines of: let [tex]x = 0.\overline{999}[/tex] then [tex]\frac{x}{10} = 0.0\overline{999}[/tex] and [tex]x - \frac{x}{10} = 0.\overline{999} - 0.0\overline{999} = 0.9[/tex] so [tex]\frac{9x}{10} = 0.9[/tex] Therefore: [tex] x = 1[/tex] Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/140190-typing-math/page/2/#findComment-831438 Share on other sites

enedene
How would I implement latex on my site (much simpler than BB)? And once implemented how would I use it? I use Ubuntu Linux. Daniel0
The bbcode here simply just passes the TeX string to an external parser. Actually doing it from scratch is less trivial (search Google). There is also jsMath, which you can use. Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/140190-typing-math/page/2/#findComment-853625 Share on other sites
Ken2k7
I still have NO idea how to type using those BB Codes. How can you guys remember them? Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/140190-typing-math/page/2/#findComment-854242 Share on other sites
Daniel0
I've used them extensively when writing math for other purposes. LaTeX is a typesetting language that only has semantic meaning, kind of like HTML has. Things like typography, layout, hyphenation, etc. is done automatically. GingerRobot
LaTeX is also used extensively in scientific papers, journals and the like. I guess i'm really going to have to get to grips with it at some point. Daniel0
There is an editor called LyX which you can use if you don't feel like typing it in plain text. I believe they call it a WYSIWYM (what you see is what you mean) editor. I think it's available on all platforms. You can of course also just use vim and the CLI. Mchl
I occasionally get this meassage at the top of forum No jsMath TeX fonts found -- using image fonts instead. These may be slow and might not print well. Use the jsMath control panel to get additional information. Daniel0
That would be when someone has used jsMath in a post. Either install the jsMath TeX fonts, or see if the notice can be disabled in the mentioned control panel (note the little button in the bottom right corner saying "jsMath").
