About Joomla

I really need to know the answer for this issue. Everyone has his own opinion, some web companies use Joomla, others write their own web application code e.g. shopping cart.

 

In general, Which is really better, using the ready Joomla shopping cart or use my own application?

In other words, some people say: why are you writing a shopping cart application where Joomla is here and available?

Other consider writing my own shopping cart is better and gives the website a "distinctive quality"!

Most of the web applications such as Joomla and OSCommerce are open source, so you can customize and style them as you please.

 

Depending on your knowledge, it could take a long time to make your own customized, secure, reliable, robust etc... web application such as a shopping cart with all the nice features.

Because there is no real answer.  It's whatever you want to do.

 

IMO, if you're asking this question then you probably want to use a pre-built CMS, shopping cart, or whatever you need and customize it.

If a client requires a major modification to the way the system works then this is where you run into issues using off-the-shelf software. You have to fully understand the system to be able to make the required modifications. This scenario is not so bad when it is your own system as you know exactly what to modify and can estimate time to do it.

 

If you need something up and running quick then use Joomla, osCommerce, etc. Once you have time, learn the main parts of the system to give you ideas on how to construct your own version adding the features that most of you clients require.
