hey, im writing a script to check to see if a table has a certain value in a table and i know the value isnt there but the script isnt working the way i want it

$result = mysql_db_query($database, "select * from $table WHERE username = '$username1'") or die (mysql_error());

//echo $result;

if($result != null)

{

echo 'You cannot view this members profile';

}

else

when i echo the result, i get resource id#5 meaning its not null, how do i do an if statement like this? im lost???

You need to use mysql_fetch_assoc and then select a field like:

$result = mysql_db_query($database, "select * from $table WHERE username = '$username1'") or die (mysql_error());
//echo $result;
$row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result);
echo $resul['field'];

if ($result = mysql_db_query($database, "select * from $table WHERE username = '$username1'")) {
  if (mysql_num_rows($result)) {
    // username exists.
  } else {
    // username does not exist.
  }
} else {
  // query failed. handle error
}
