How long until my hermit crab re-hardens?

They live in a shell but the part that sticks out is an exoskeleton. They shed it so they can grow - just like a snake.

 

But as Corbin mentioned, they don't grow shells, they have to find new ones should the smaller one be too small for it's new size. So point being, if there is no larger shell nearby, your crab won't 'harden'. It will remain pink, soft and vulnerable (oh, the door's wide open for sexual innuendos on that one, eh fellas?)
