tibberous
My hermit crab has been in a whole the last couple weeks so I dug it up and it was pink. I put it back in the hole and covered it up. I don't want to mess with it until it hardens - any idea when that will be?
.josh
You should ask your mom. I hear she has lots of crabs, so she'd probably know.

.josh
Absolutely. I needed to take my daily dose of "Stand up, point at the computer screen and yell BURN" medicine.
corbin
Uhhh..... I don't think hermit crabs make shells.... I think they scavenge to find shells.

tibberous
They live in a shell but the part that sticks out is an exoskeleton. They shed it so they can grow - just like a snake.
nrg_alpha
They live in a shell but the part that sticks out is an exoskeleton. They shed it so they can grow - just like a snake. But as Corbin mentioned, they don't grow shells, they have to find new ones should the smaller one be too small for it's new size. So point being, if there is no larger shell nearby, your crab won't 'harden'. It will remain pink, soft and vulnerable (oh, the door's wide open for sexual innuendos on that one, eh fellas?)
