PHP Function in .js file

Has anyone got an idea how I can call a php function in a .js file. I am trying to customize a wordpress theme, but the slider which is controlled by a .js file only displays a dot in the slider-navigation, and I would like to get it to display the featured titles.

you cannot directly call php from javascript because php is a server-side language and javascript is client-side.  In order to have javascript execute a php function, you have to use AJAX.  Basically with AJAX you use javascript to make an http request and receive a response, without the full page reloading. 

 

The easiest way to do an AJAX request is to use a javascript framework like jquery, as it has built into it cross-browser AJAX functionality.  Getting jquery is as easy as getting the latest source file from jquery.com (click on the big download button on the right to be taken to the latest .js file).  Upload it and include it on your page with standard javascript script include tag.  Then you would do something like this:

This example will load your page, then make an AJAX http GET request to phpFile.php, sending parameter foo=bar.  The php script will then echo it out and that is what the js response variable will contain, and it will alert('bar');

 

 

NOTE: You can also do an AJAX http POST request by using the same syntax above, except using jquery's $.post(...)  and in your php script using $_POST

You can I believe include php in a .js file, if you set up your sever to process .js files as php. This will allow you to dynamically create some of the javascript file on the server before sending to them at the browser. But one thing to realize, that Crayon Violent was getting at, is that this php won't be processed after being sent to the browser. It will only allow for dynamic creation of the php script, not for the script to be altered during runtime.

Can anyone maybe tell me how I would call the wordpress functions permalink() and title() in the below js file. Cause I'm a little confused and don't know what to do. And its getting quite urgent?

allowing arbitrary data to be sent and executed as php? Yes, terrible idea.  Sending data that is validated/filtered and then processed? No different than receiving/processing any other user input... IOW, always treat AJAX data as user input and validate/filter accordingly.

I have a suggestion: modify the code he gave you so that it does what you want it to do.

 

It's slightly less than complete: it makes the call to phpFile.php but it doesn't do anything with the response. That's where you come in. You're supposed to read what he posted, particularly the comments, understand it, and then finish it. You need to modify the callback function ("function (response) {...}") to do something with the response. Example: write() it out.

I did modify the code slightly. ''phpFile.php"  will echo something no matter what arguments it is called with.  There is no sign that it was called, so trying to return something at this point has no meaning.

Try http://www.treeful.com/temp/phpFile.php and it will echo ' no argument'

try http://www.treeful.com/temp/phpFile.php?param1=hello and it echos "hello'

but try http://www.treeful.com/temp/phptest.htm and we get no echo

I also tried phptest.php with no luck.
