Validation for a 10 digit phone number

I'm looking for a function or some logic that will validate a 10 digit long phone number. I'd like to make sure that the number is exactly 10 digits, no letters, no hyphens etc.. And also need to check first digit of the number start with 0.

Eg: 0714556260

I simply check something like this..

$test = 0714556260;

if (preg_match('/^0\d{9}$/', $test) ) {
  echo 'valid';
} else {
   echo 'not valid';
}

But can not get to work. Can someone help out?

Thank you..

The reason why your initial test didn't work, or rather seemed like it wasn't working, is quite simple. Though, it might be a bit surprising:

php > $test = 0714556260;
php > echo strlen ($test);
9
php > echo $test;
120773808

Quite simply: By adding the 0 in front of an integer, you're telling PHP that it's a octal (base-8) number. To get it treated like a decimal, you need to add quotes around it to make it a string. Which is really is, by the way; A string of digits. ;)
