thara
I'm looking for a function or some logic that will validate a 10 digit long phone number. I'd like to make sure that the number is exactly 10 digits, no letters, no hyphens etc.. And also need to check first digit of the number start with 0. Eg: 0714556260 I simply check something like this.. $test = 0714556260; if (preg_match('/^0\d{9}$/', $test) ) { echo 'valid'; } else { echo 'not valid'; } But can not get to work. Can someone help out? Thank you.. Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/273149-validation-for-a-10-digit-phone-number/ Share on other sites
MDCode
These two resources will help you with the all numbers and exactly 10 characters: ctype_digit() and strlen() Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/273149-validation-for-a-10-digit-phone-number/#findComment-1405595 Share on other sites

Christian F.
The reason why your initial test didn't work, or rather seemed like it wasn't working, is quite simple. Though, it might be a bit surprising: php > $test = 0714556260; php > echo strlen ($test); 9 php > echo $test; 120773808 Quite simply: By adding the 0 in front of an integer, you're telling PHP that it's a octal (base-8) number. To get it treated like a decimal, you need to add quotes around it to make it a string. Which is really is, by the way; A string of digits. Edited January 15, 2013 by Christian F.
