I find plain text to be boring and not very eye-catching - so a jQuery pop-up box would be better, you could also go the extra mile and make the registration and login forms pop-up boxes aswell, and use jQuery / aJax to validate the forms. I mean, I know I logged in successfully after I get transferred to the page, and my username is displayed on the page. Anything else is just wasted time, to tell me something I would know anyway. If you do a jQuery sort that fades away at least it doesn't require the user to deal with it. BTW, Clients never know what they want, and usually when they do, they're wrong.
