kathmeejee
Hello, I'm kathmeejee, in case you didn't see already. I'm very new to PHP, and thought it might be helpful, and I might learn it faster if I joined a web forum so that others can help me learn. I'm a deli girl at walmart, who has learned as much I could about website coding when I could find the time. I'm working on five website projectst that I hope might both give me a good portfolio while earning me some coin via google adsense while gaining experience. I don't want to be a deli girl forever, lol. As for the question in my title, I googled it, and, apparently it used to stand for personal home page, but they changed it to PHP, and I'm wondering if it's as a reference to Godel, Escher, Bach and their discussion of recursion via Achilles and the Tortoise's experience with the GOD which stands for GOD Of the Djinn, to illustrate the concept of mathematical recursion. Zane
No. Just as you read, it used to stand for Personal Home Page, but they then changed it to something called a reverse acronym or something. So, anyway, PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor. -edit for -pre Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/290188-hi-does-the-first-p-really-stand-for-php/#findComment-1486499 Share on other sites
requinix
Recursive acronyms are kinda popular in software development: GNU, LAME, and WINE to name a few. PHP joined in on the fun. Jacques1
[...] I'm wondering if it's as a reference to Godel, Escher, Bach and their discussion of recursion via Achilles and the Tortoise's experience with the GOD which stands for GOD Of the Djinn, to illustrate the concept of mathematical recursion. That's a very romantical explanation. But I fear it was just a bunch of drunken guys doing wordplay. CroNiX
I always understood it to be Pre Hypertext Processor Because it gets processed before the hypertext (html) gets sent out to the browser Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/290188-hi-does-the-first-p-really-stand-for-php/#findComment-1486702 Share on other sites
Zane
I can't believe I missed that detail. I meant to write Hypertext Preprocessor Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/290188-hi-does-the-first-p-really-stand-for-php/#findComment-1486732 Share on other sites
gizmola
I'm pretty sure it was just "Personal Home Page", but after the Zend guys got involved and it started to take off, they figure that was too lame, and decided to come up with a fantastical story of what it stands for, because the original name is kind of embarrassing now.
