Invalid: print 'This isn't "that" bad!'; print "She said "Hi", didn't she?"; Valid: print 'This isn\'t "that" bad!'; print "She said \"Hi\", didn't she?"; You have to tell PHP that you mean the character " or ', and not the end of the string.
