LemonInflux
I've been messing with the idea of partitioning my PC and installing Linux on the other half. Is this possible? Would really like to know; windows is getting kind of dry, if you know what I mean So yeah, if anyone's done this, or has any advice? I was thinking a standard partitioning, then downloading/installing linux on the other half. So, help please, Tom Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/78309-windowslinux-help-o/ Share on other sites
neylitalo
Yes, it's possible. I suggest using Ubuntu - it's pretty smart about picking out the Windows partitions and arranging your boot menu so it Just Works . You'll want a minimum of 10G if you want to do anything besides look at it, so keep that in mind. LemonInflux
I have about 200G spare. Most of my hard drive is on an external, so I hardly use my normal one. Any links/tutorials for setting this up? Or is it as simple as making a partition and installing? LemonInflux
I was wrong; Total Capacity: 447.13 GB Sum of Hard Disks: (C: F: ) Used: 21.90 GB Free: 425.22 GB I think I'm ok for space. Daniel0
Actually, just download download it (= Ubuntu in this case) and burn it to a CD. Boot into the CD and follow the GUI installation. It guides you through everything including partitioning. There isn't really any need for a guide as the installation is pretty easy. It will detect any installation of other operating systems (including Windows) and add them to the boot menu so you can select which one to boot. LemonInflux
Will it create the partition, or will I need to? Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/78309-windowslinux-help-o/#findComment-396266 Share on other sites
LemonInflux
Downloading Ubuntu now. I guess this'll make me a Windux user Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/78309-windowslinux-help-o/#findComment-396279 Share on other sites
Daniel0
Will it create the partition, or will I need to? It can do, but you can also do it yourself. There are a couple of different options. LemonInflux
Is there a way besides putting it on a CD? I haven't got any CD's >_< Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/78309-windowslinux-help-o/#findComment-396916 Share on other sites
trq
No, you need to boot from the cd. Well, there are other ways but not for someone new to Linux and not with Ubuntu. LemonInflux
So I couldn't put it on an external and boot from that? :/ Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/78309-windowslinux-help-o/#findComment-396932 Share on other sites
trq
Not at all easily. Just get yourself a cd. Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/78309-windowslinux-help-o/#findComment-396943 Share on other sites
Orio
You can try booting from some disk on key (I never done that, I don't know if it's possible). Orio. Daniel0
I found this: http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-on-usb-bar http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=101780 http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/09/28/usb-ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon-install/ But they all require an already installed Linux distribution or booting into a Live CD in order to create the Live USB (or whatever to call it).
