The Little Guy
On some boards (Website Critique) I feel that some people are just advertising their site, because they post "critique", and only have one post to their account. They then never come back and review their post (sometimes). They also place the post in a "I want a review" style so it doesn't get deleted or locked (locked is pointless, because it is still visible, so it is still an ad). So... I was thinking, that maybe it would be a requirement to have a minimum number of posts in other boards before you can post in the Website Critique board? I wouldn't want to waist my time critiquing someone's website when they will never come back to review the critique I spent 10 minutes on would you? GingerRobot
I wouldn't want to waist my time critiquing someone's website when they will never come back to review the critique I spent 10 minutes on would you? So don't bother? There will naturally be people who use that kind of thing as a way of advertising their site. And, frankly, good luck to them. It's your choice wether or not you visit a site and take a look round. Personally, i very rarely do for the reasons you mentioned and i'd be far more likely to take the time if it were for someone who i know contributes to the site. .josh
By that logic, we should have a minimum post count for people posting in other help sections, to make sure that they aren't just spamming for some magic wand solution or something. And how exactly would they raise their post count anyways? Spam random crap in other forums? I don't really think extra spam in other places is worth the trade-off. Make them post at least 10 posts that answer/ask legit questions? One would think that if they are looking for a critique, they are past the stage of really asking for coding help, and we aren't in the business of forcing people to help out around here. I agree that there are probably a lot of people who post asking for a critique for the sole reason of advertising, but there's really no way to stop everybody, unless they are blatant about it, in which case, I delete, not lock them. 448191
Echo CV. On top of that, I don't think we should care what people's first posts is (as long as it doesn't break any rules naturally). Perhaps the poster is usually active on a different forum that doesn't have anything similar. Although I agree that some people's motivation for posting their URI in WSC seems to differ from 'looking for help to improve', for which the board is intended. Usually this ends in 'if you don't want critique, don't post here' -type discussions. I don't think it's a big issue that warrants anyone's immediate attention. redbullmarky
personally, as long as the site posted for critique is not complete turd, or trying to sell me viagra, and doesn't break the forum rules, I'm cool - I've learnt a fair bit myself about what I do/don't like in websites just by seeing what other "non-professionals" come up with and what people say. So even if I don't actually offer a critique, I can still get something out of it. Daniel0
If the topic breaks any rules then just report it and then a mod/admin will take care of it. ober
I'm not going to beat a dead horse here, but I echo the sentiments of the other staff that have posted in the thread.
