Alexa Rank almost never squares with amount of traffic people claim

Recommended Posts

Since I have started developing sites and tracking traffic and website rankings, I often notice that so many people claim their website is getting a certain amount of traffic per day or per month but it doesnt seem to square with their website rank. sometimes they claim to be getting an inordinate amount of more traffic than one of my sites yet their Alexa rank is well below mine! anyone have a better explanation?

The Alexa traffic stats are calculated from visits to websites where the user has the Alexa toolbar installed into their browser as far as I'm aware. This could easily cause different stats to those recorded by the web server itself.

Traffic does not have a direct relation to search engine rankings. How much traffic do you think Facebook gets per day? Are their pages indexed on a search engine, no! The data is hidden to engines.

However for your average website the higher the ranking under a keyphrase the more potential traffic. Alexa ranking is not a good measurable. As SemiApocalyptic stated, how do sites achieve this ranking. If it requires 3rd party software like their toolbar, then it is an even worse measurable. The be all and end all is Google, whether you use Google or not. If a site ranks higher than yours under a keyphrase on Google, it will get more traffic. Alexa is a baby search engine in comparison and must get a miniscule market share.

Not disagreeing with the sentiment, but Facebook pages are indexed.

mmm, yeah. I think this is since they changed privacy settings. people have left their profiles on public view. never used to see profiles indexed.

Agreed. Why people force to get traffic from facebook?its never good for me.

Alexa is not reliable and also how reliable are the claims of those with how much traffic they get?

Lets say Web Owner A says: Hey, I get 500 people online at one time!

Web Owner B says: Hey, I get 500 people online at one time!

Owner B is based on always have 500 people online whereas Owner A bases it on one time.

Such that you could say: PHPFreaks.com gets 3199 people online at one time!

Even though its a total distortation of the truth, you can see what I mean.
