Use of subdomains?

I am asking, what is the use of subdomains. I have a hosting account with GoDaddy, and they give you 25 free subdomains. But they only allow it so if you store something in

www.example.com/images/example.jpg

then it can ALSO be called from:

images.example.com/example.jpg

 

But what is the use of that?

You could aslo use it divide applications up.

 

For example, you could install a wordpress blog into ~/your-server-root/blog then access it via http://blog.yourdomain.com

Mostly they are for separate applications on the same domain, or splitting up resources.

 

Each subdomain could point to a completely different server. For example, images.example.com goes to a server optimized for serving images.

That's a very typical, though not ideal, setup for using multiple subdomains on one machine. Simply using subdirectories makes it easier for (most) people to keep track of their stuff - means they don't have to remember 25 different locations for the 25 different webroots.

By the way, GoDaddy is just a shitty host. Most hosts allow you to specify a different working directory for your subdomains.

I know, I was going to use http://www.webhostfreaks.com but it was just too expensive to start off with. So I went with GoDaddy for 2 moths and see where things go from there

Ain't that the truth.  I tend to use ICDSoft.  A bit expensive, (~$7 a month), but they offer a lot, have a rock solid CP, no down time, and great technical support.
