Would anyone know why my email confirmation would work sometimes and not other times. Yesterday I tried registering a new member to my site 5 times. The info would go through to the database but he never received the confirmation email.

 

Today, I tried it again and it went through!!!

well if some of the emails have gone through, then it's probably not an issue with the email server.  Probably an issue with your code.  Yes, you will need to post code and provide details. I don't know how you think we can help without any details. 

Is this a company and you are on The Advantage Hosting Plan?

 

Post the mail script as .josh already suggested and ask/phone the company is there a way to buy a dedicated IP address using this shared hosting plan.

. . . the time it did work were you sending it to the same email address as you were when it was not received? There are many reasons why email may not get to its intended recipient. If it always fails to specific domains vs. inconsistent results to specific domains the root cause will be very different.

First to answer Josh. After sending hours on this problem, I finally decided to ask for help. I usually try to figure things out myself and, in my opinion, don't do to bad at it. I have set up my mysql and the php for the searching, linking, etc. and I did this by myself without knowing anything about either. So when I first asked the question, considering it does work sometimes, I thought it may be more than just the coding and therefore did not provide the coding I used but as stated in my additional post, I was more than willing to post the code if the experts thought it would help. So to receive that kind of response from you was totally uncalled for. Plus in addition to your response, the remarks at the bottom of your post regarding paying for services and your additional new topic regarding beer money, the site I am trying to work it is also a volunteer site with very little income, it certainly does not generate a win-fall of money. If it did I can assure you that I would not be going through all of this. If I do decide to pay for some help, and it has crossed my mind, my dear Josh, with your attitude, I won't be providing beer money for you.

 

Now to answer Guru. The email address I mentioned in my first post was the same each time I tried. It was my husbands and I would check his email account to see if it came through. When it didn't, I would delete the entry from my database, wait awhile and then try again. I did this five times yesterday. This morning I decided I would try it once more and that is when it worked. 

 

I have a number of email accounts available to me, covering 4 different providers. I had thought it may have something to do with that so I tried each email account I had plus some of the members emails. It was the same result. Some would go through and others wouldn't. This afternoon I set up 3 of my current members and only 1 of the 3 worked.

 

I will go through my coding and find what I need to post so you can have a look at it.

I don't know how you can possibly take offense to my post. I think you're blowing my response way out of proportion, taking offense to something that isn't there. But, to each his own. Good luck with your issue.

1. No one is going to go through that much code to figure out your problem.  You need to show us just the relevant part.  We're not a place where you can just dump non-working or incorrectly-working code, say "fix it," and have it done.  That's not what we do.  We're willing to help, but only if you (or anyone) has shown they've attempted to work on it your(them)self(ves).  If you need more than that, you should consider hiring a developer.

If we needed more code, we'd ask for it. If using a library, particularly a popular one like PHPMailer you pretty much never need to post that. We can go downloaded if necessary, but most of the time there is nothing wrong in the library code.

 

 

As for your issue, diagnosing email issues can be hard, especially if you don't have access to email server logs on the outgoing/incoming servers. There are a number of rules of thumb about how to avoid your emails getting blocked by spam filters. Using a library like PHPMailer is a good start as it will typically cover creating proper and valid emails.

 

Another rule of thumb is the address you use as your From: address should be on the same domain as your site and it can be helpful if it exists as a real mailbox. As such, try sending your messages with a real email ending in @yoursite.com.

 

From what I understand it sounds like the messages sometimes arrive but sometimes not, even if all the info for the message is the same (ie same content, same to/from addresses, etc). Have you checked the spam folders to make sure it truly doesn't arrive rather than just being filtered out? Does your mail provider have spam controls that may filter the message at the server level? Have any of the emails just arrived late (maybe hours later) rather than quickly? Have you been able to identify any kind of possible pattern for when it works vs doesn't work (ie time of day, certain providers, etc).

OK, here's my take. Assuming you do send the email to the same email address and it is received some times and not others, it doesn't appear to be a problem with email filtering, spam, etc. That's not 100%, but I would start by looking at the code. So, the first thing I would do is add some logging around the process. How do you know that the email was even generated and that there were no errors?

 

Looking at the methods in your FGMembersite class, you are not capturing errors in most of the ones that send emails. Also, the class is not taking advantage of the reason for creating a class. All of the methods that send an email have code to initiate the mailer class. You should instead create a method to initiate the PHP mailer class and call that from within all the methods that send an email. Never write the same code multiple times when you can write it once. Also, at the end of those methods you have logic to send the email. In at least one you record the error (not sure what happens to it).

Pro Tip: No need for that if() condition. If the Send() method returns true/false you could have just done this:

But, that's not what you want to do in order to see what is happening. As I stated before you should create your own method in your class to send the emails. That method would call the Send() method. But, you can then add additional error handling within your method. Have the method record (in DB or Log File) every instance of an attempt to send an email and whether it succeeded or not. It would probably make sense to record all the information about the email: from/to addresses, body, etc. You can create switches to determine how much information to log. So when everything it working well just log the bare necessities. When there are problems, set the logging level higher to help debug the problem.
