Look at the security code I had to try and read to sign up here  ???

Is it just me, or is that 1st character nothing like an "r", and how about that lower case "t"

I think it might be better for them to have normal font (or more normal font) but you have to type it in backwards. I agree that that captcha is hard to read (yes, I know you can request a new image.. but they are all pretty hard to read)

I had a similar problem signing up. The request another image did not work and I ended up listening to it.

At least you should only need to sign up once and you should never need to see such a poorly designed image a second time.

I had the exact same experince actually - could not get a second image, and ended up listening to the sound version. Although it did not work either, and I had to use the secondary "download" link.

Would be easier if it was an animated GIF that had easier to read font but glows from side to side, like a spot light. :)

That would kill those bots for sure and make it easy for new members.

The capcha has been enhanced in 1.1.x  In RC3 they were really hard to read.  Now they should be easier on the eye but hard on bots.

I would guess that email validation (Verifying user's email address) removes the need for a captcha, as a bot can't validate an email as well, and everything can it.

Sure they can - it could even be done in PHP. It would just watch the inbox, and when the verification message arrives, it makes a curl request to the URL specified in the email, or responds to the email, or whatever.
