Even Firefox has color matching issues at times between images and html rendered colors.  I have given up and basically where I can I use a small background image of the color i'm trying to match set to fill the space of the body or whatever container your using

Yeah, IE6 is dodgy when trying to match colors with images .. and most particularly with png images!

Even simple web colors can not match an image using the same colors. I've had many frustrating hours due to this.

Try converting the img to jpg (and only use it in IE6) - that's worked for me 80% of the time.

Most of the time, for me, this turns out to be a problem with the PNG image. What software are you using to produce them - photoshop? I have problems making photoshop "export" files properly as PNG, the colors always get slightly altered. So I use GIMP instead -

create the image I need in photoshop

save it as a .psd

open it in gimp

export it as a .png from gimp

Check this "color test" out:

For me I can see color difference between the centered image and the surrounding background color in IE7 and IE6, not in FF.

Here is screenshots of the colortest taken by www.browsershots.org (started 17-03-2008 12:10, so it has to finish up in the next 20min or so): http://browsershots.org/http://wuhtzu.dk/sandbox/colortest/colortest.html

I'm not saying you can't save .png's properly in photoshop or that you are using photoshop at all, but I just personally can't make it work :P

Hope this helps

I should add that the above images, use in the color test, were saved from both gimp and photoshop using default settings:

File -> Save As

Choose PNG as format

Pressing Save

Clicking OK to whatever popups came but keeping all default settings
