  1. The site is a lot better than it was when you first posted it. Although it is a simple design...it has a lot to improve on. - Layout. The layout of the site is important, a bad layout can lead to your websites content not being read in a good manner...leading to a bad experience and could potentially lead to the user to leave. Look up grids for webdesign, and it will help you with the minimalistic design you are trying to create. - Spacing. I have noticed a lot of inconsistant spacing within your design. Consistant spacing is important for a light design like yours. Try to keep the spacing as consistant as possible, to allow users to navigate your websites content more easily, this also fits into the grids for webdesign. - Alignment. The alignment of the body of your design, does not match with the header and footer of your design...which causes it to look a little bit unprofessional. - Typography. You only use two fonts within your design, arial and sans-serif. A good website design has around 3 fonts within the design. You can use on font for headings...which helps define headings within content. You can then have another font for body text. The line hiehgt of the body text should be about 1.5 times bigger than the size of your font. Such as if you use 14pt for the font size, the line height will be 21pt. This helps with the way the user can take in the content from your webpage. - Colour. The green is a little too bright and can have an impact on some users eyes when they look at the page. Here are some general things... - Contact form. What exactly do you want users to contact you about? This is because all you are requesting the user to enter is their details. You could provide a text area or a drop down box which specifies what exactly the user is wanting to contact you about, such as design services, website feedback, website bugs or even just a message to say hi. - Contact info. Why have your email at the top of the page in the header? You could possibly mention it on your contact page, or in your footer. - Footer. Get rid of that huge chunk of text at the bottom of your page...and make a new page for the terms of service and legal information. Then in your 'footer' have maybe on the left...design (copyright symbol) 2009 STUDIO378D. The on the right side have something like Email: YourEmailAddress, the link to the new TOS & Legal Information page. This is to tidy it up a bit. - Links. Why do you have a '?' after some of your links on your website...is there a need for it? I hope this helps as that is about all I can think of.
  2. It's like a layer, but not called a layer. It's basically z-index in css, as that can help you 'stack' or 'layer' images. This might help, as well as this. Hope you find this useful.
  3. It is a very nice website design...one I can actually find very few flaws with. I congratulate you on this. But the design is much like a block design. One main thing I must point out is the colours you have used in your design. The red text for the 'xhtml' part of the logo, and for the hyperlinks...is just to bright. It makes the text of the link and logo a bit hard to read, as well as hurting the eyes. Maybe change it to the colour of the orange you have in the banner for the word 'most'. Another small thing I must point out is there is a spelling mistake on the contact page, on the templates description text underneath the heading on the right hand side of the design. Well done.
  4. The first thing I notice when viewing the homepage, is all of the links in the navigation...then all the links under it. Maybe try to compact it down a bit, so there isn't too much stuff for the navigation. - The computer systems page...with the drop downs. That could be improved. As I have looked at all of the drop down menus there, and there are only like 1-3 options other than the 'View Product' option. It would look better if you have links instead of these, and make the boxes slightly bigger. It would make for much easier finding of specific things. - CSS. I would have had a look at your CSS, had you not have four different CSS files in the source code...why not just have one or maybe two...not four. - Validation. 76 errors. Not a bad concept for the design, but still needs a lot of work.
  5. This is not a css question, it's more of a PHP question. Also make good use of the code tags.
  6. I meant the bricks, and also...if you are still keeping the bricks...make sure it tiles well, as the current one you can see where it ends/begins vertically.
  7. A bit too light a design. - Alignment. The alignment of the content of the header does not match. The headers of the stuff in the sidebar does not align properly with the spacer splitting the heading and content. - Spacing. The spacing on the site is inconsistant which also isn't helped by the alignment issues. - Typography. You could use at least three fonts to make it a good design. Take a look into typography and how it can make or break a design. - Header. Why is that got a shadow effect on it, but the rest of the site doesn't follow this kind of design? - Validation. The page has 82 errors. - What is the point of the signing up and signing in? Other than that...good job.
  8. This is not a bad design, but it has some potential. - Background. The background of the site doesn't really suite the whole theme of the site, and makes it look cheap and tacky. - Alignment. The alignment of the content of the site is quite bad, as the 'We are committed...' box doesn't line up with the rest of the content. The latest news content doesn't align properly to the title of it. - Spacing. The spacing of the site is good, but there is some inconsistant spacing between the header below the nav and the content of the page. - Typography. Apart from the navigation, you only use one font for the whole content of the page. You should use one font for the headings and another for the body text. Maybe research a little more into typography before deciding on fonts. Not a bad design at all, keep up the good work.
  9. Heya, not a bad design but it looks good. - Spacing. I see some incosistant spacing in your design, which sometimes can lead to users having a hard time reading your content/ Maybe look up grids for webdesign, as these are key in light designs like this. - Alignment. The logo isn't really aligned with the rest of the content. The 'Our Products' content doesn't line up to it, and makes it look a bit uneven. - Typography. You use Segoe UI and Calibri Body for all of the text (apart from the logo) in your design. One font for a website design gets boring. Mix it up a little and research a little more into typography for different designs. - Validation. It doesn't validate, but it is literally only about 5 things to clear up and they are easy. Other than that (I might have missed some things) it is all good.
  10. Why is there no closing tag for the css, and a huge gap between some css properties? It might help if you post some of the html involved as well.
  11. That would modify the whole <p> tag. You could use this instead... <span style='color: #ffffff;'>White Text</span>
  12. There is an even better one called browsershots that has loads more variety to test on.
  13. It's not a bad concept for a design, but it needs a lot of work... - Graphics. You need to sort out or get rid of that right purple graphic, as it even brings up a horizontal scrollbar in my 1280px wide screen. - Typography. You only use one font for your designs...Cambria. I have looked in your CSS and I see you make use of the 'inherit'. Mix it up a little, have one font for your titles, another for your body text. Line height should also be (normally, but not on all occasions) about 1.5 times bigger than the size of the font. - Spacing and alignment. The navigation is stuck to the top of the page...with no space to breathe apart from under it. It doesn't look nice as it's not centered or aligned to the left of the page. The content of the page is poorly aligned...leading to users being able to not really navigate the page properly. Look up grids for website design, to help you create a good light design. - For like the titles of the stuff (like 'Quick Search' etc), get rid of the purple background, align the text to the left. Make the text a bit bigger. Align the great purple graphic (without the purple box with it) to the right...and there you are. - Language. Why do you have the salary of the creative jobs in '$' when it is a UK based company advertising UK based jobs? Not bad though. Just a few tips to help you out.
  14. You can also do it with CSS, which requires no javascript... CSS Play Enjoy.
  15. Not a bad idea, but it has a lot to improve on... - Alignment. align the content into a fixed width (such as 960px) to get it neat. Also align the content and footer to match this, rather than having it all over the place. - Spacing. This is quite poor I have to say. Consistent spacing is key to a good design. Try looking up grids for website design. - Typography. You use 'Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif' for everything. Use one font for your headings and another for body text. Line height for body text should be 1.5 times bigger than the font itself usually to allow for easy reading. - Colour. The bright pink against the white is quite straining against the eyes, maybe make it a bit darker. - CSS. You need to fix the CSS validator link for it to actually validate your CSS rather than go to just the validator. - Again alignment. If you do not align your content (as it is now), and it is uneven and everywhere...users will find it very hard to navigate through the website...which may make them leave. Just a few tips.
  16. I was asked to make a very short video for college, including some items on a list. Note: Does contain some flashing images. Watch The Video Enjoy.
  17. That's ok. I also forgot to mention about the login. You could make it so it validates the login on the same page, rather than going to a page with just some text...it makes for some nicer viewing and you don't have to click the back button in your browser to try and login again.
  18. First thing I notice is that the footer is fixed, and displays over content on the page when you are first viewing it. Make it so that it is actually at the bottom of the page, rather than fixed at the bottom of the browser. The spacing on the site needs some work, as consistent spacing is key to allowing users to take in the content of the page. Typography needs some work, use one font for headings and another for body content. It's not a bad design, but it needs a lot of work to achieve a decent design.
  19. Not a bad design, nice and clean. There are a few things to pick up on... - Validation, easy stuff. A div id can only be used once, and a div class can be used more than once. - Typography. I looked in your CSS and I see that you use 'Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif' for all of your content. Use one font for headings, another for body text. This is a suggestion by the way. - The question textarea box has a green border, but other input fields have a grey one, so you might need to change that green to grey. Also sort the email input field so it matches the width of all the others. - Spacing...let some content within the boxes breathe. - You could possibly (just a suggestion), move the login box to the right with the other ones, make all of them wider and then have a wider main box. But you would have to have more content on the main page for this. Just a few things to pick up on, but all in all...great job.
  20. This topic is aimed at all of the people who design there own websites and themes etc. I was wondering, where do you go for your inspiration, if you use any at all? I use websites like the ones listed below, as it gives you some style ideas and modern techniques to help you create a real original and professional design. Abduzeedo WebCreme Design You Trust So yeah, list the websites you use for inspiration and the reason why you use them...also, you could even recommend some. Discuss.
  21. I think the 'position: relative;' is causing it in your 'outerBodyColumn' div css.
  22. What is the best way to prevent from XSS, SQL Injections and other forms of attacks when having forms in your PHP application? I have always gone with the mysql_real_escape_string() and the htmlentities() for the SQL and XSS attacks... It's just that I want to know the ways of fully (well, there will always be a way to get through it) sanatize your data input without the use of a database... ...and also the ways of fully sanatizing your input data with the use of a database. If anyone could please shed some deeper detail on this, it would be great.
  23. Maybe have this in your css... body, html { margin: 0; padding: 0; } You may also need to post the full css as there may be something else causing it.
  24. The thing is though, the three main things (this is not from some course) that are important in web design are... - Consistent Spacing - Contrast - Functionality As you could have a brilliant site...but it will fail if nobody can navigate it properly etc.
  25. Specify a width for the image, as it will just take however long the text is for the width resulting in different lengths of the buttons.
