but that's my point.  It's not possible to simultaneously believe in conflicting things.  You either believe in one thing or the other.

While this may be true with religious beliefs, it may not be with personal.

From the previous example:

While I don't believe in letting innocent people die, I don't believe in saying the word "computer".

So if I don't say, "computer", I'm violating my personal belief by letting my innocent daughter die while maintaining my religious beliefs.

If I say "computer" then I'm violating God's word but maintaining my belief of not letting an innocent person die.

What if I truly believe in both of these.  So does it become a question of what belief is more important?  If I choose my personal belief does it mean that I don't truly believe in God altogether and vice versa?

I mean of course I can come up with all these ridiculous circumstances where you have to violate one for the other but, for the most part, you're correct.  It's hard to find conflicting beliefs that you truly believe in, it's usually one or the other.

@OP, I hope you enjoyed our discussion on what a true "belief" is.  Please come back next week for our discussion, on a more specific topic, "Pro-Life vs Abortion".

Hi everybody, thought i would give you all an update, whether you care or not lol. I decided to say no to the job and one of the main reasons behind it, is that the guy wants to just focus on pr0n and nothing else. Since that is the best selling market (his words). Plus some of his major sites i do not agree with (violent pr0n)

But i would like to thank you all for your opinions and help on this matter

go with the p0rn site even if you dint put it on your portfolio it still helps in your quest to become the best in your area of expertise.

even if the site does not agree with your moral beliefs they are still going to pay you the money.

you could also take this job on and drop it when you find something better at least this way you will still be getting paid.

putting all the religious and moral aspects of doing something like this to one side if you have really knocked the job back what do you do now for money.  as you said you have just left university and i know from experience that you need real life jobs to begin to really learn how to build websites to a standard that is accepted by companies you build sites for or companies you work for.

it might not be something that you put in your portfolio but it would definitely give you the experience you need and also give you something to talk about at the pub for a long time.

as for the content of the sites this is just code to the programmer it is not like you have to become a member of the site and visit it regularly just because you have built it.

we all have to do things we dint like or don't want to do at some point in our lives but if it means getting paid and getting the experience needed in this industry to make it then i would do the job.

as you can probably tell i would do the job even if i thought the site is not something i am into but if it pays and i didn't have a job there would be no second thought to taking the job.  once you have a foot in the door it then becomes easier to get to the next level in the industry.

This is the whole point of the discussion.  If you put your moral beliefs aside and take the job, then you really don't have this belief in the first place.

I agree but, this is totally different than morals & beliefs.
