The Little Guy
I would like to upgrade my processor, I have never done an upgrade like this before, so I would like to get some help on this. I currently have a "AMD Athlon 64", and I was wondering if I can upgrade to "AMD Athlon 64 X2": http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103772 OR, do I have to stick with AMD Athlon 64's? I don't what to have to replace my MOBO if all possible. Philip
You're currently running a 939 socket, and the cpu you selected is an AM2. No-go. Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/200205-upgrade-processor/#findComment-1050683 Share on other sites
The Little Guy
Is there any 939 Socket processors that are 3.0Ghz or more? Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/200205-upgrade-processor/#findComment-1050708 Share on other sites
Philip
Good luck finding a 939 processor, AM2 replaced it, and it's been numerous years since that's been out. You're probably in better luck upgrading your motherboard, processor and memory (you're only running DDR1 - which is getting quite expensive these days) Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/200205-upgrade-processor/#findComment-1050715 Share on other sites

And surely he can't use his old harddisk due to the data connectors being different. You also might need a new CD/DVD drive depending on the connector as well. But not to worry, you can still keep your old computer case! The Little Guy
I currently have an eMachine, its about 10 years old now, and runs really well (after I did some upgrades). Is eMachine still as good a brand as it was when I got this or have they gone down hill since then? andrewgauger
I don't know what universe you are living in, but eMachine has always been the bottom of the barrel. They sacrifice all quality to get the cost down. Sad to say it my friend, but a 10 year old eMachine is better off being replaced. You can get a dual core setup (separate box) and use that to develop on and just turn your eMachine into a linux server. That is my suggestion ~$450 if you do it yourself. The Little Guy
I made a wishlist on newegg: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=12231427 What do you think? andrewgauger
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103039 I don't personally have any of these components but can say they would work together, and give you quite a few more years than your eMachine. The processor says it doesn't come with a heatsink/fan (in the specifications tab). Don't forget an OS (unless you are getting swept up by Ubuntu 10.4) Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/200205-upgrade-processor/#findComment-1050841 Share on other sites

andrewgauger
Make sure your graphics card is PCIe (x16) not AGP for this board. Did you notice the comment regarding the heatsink? andrewgauger
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185125&cm_re=ARCTIC_COOLING-_-35-185-125-_-Product This one was recommended in the review of the processor as getting it down to 38c while over clocked. It will last the life of the processor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103039 Sufficient-- $8 less. PugJr
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=12231427 Just my tidbits of advice on this list... Why DDR2 RAM? Why not DDR3? Its about the same price, and DDR3 is the future! 26$ power supply isn't worth it. If that power supply breaks and fries your computer, you are down a computer. I've seen quite a few computers get destroyed due to a poor PSU. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817165004 Look at the reviews. 50% rates it 5 eggs. Thats all my advice. andrewgauger
Cons: Cheap, and Loud. Burnt out in 2 days. Yeah, thats about the worst reviews I've ever seen for a product, take their advice and fork out a bit more so you don't get forked. foobarbaz
Pug, DDR3 is the same price? Wow. It seems like yesterday since it was released, And had a hefty sum to get even a 2GB setup with it. I def. agree with the PSU, always always get a good quality one, mine was an OCZ 700W GameXStream only for roughly $79 and it nicely complemented the ASUS board I had and my Akimbo 8800GT.
