I have seen some uses of AJAX (the latest release of vBulletin uses it) and I would definately be interested in learning it. I will give anything a go, so if I get into it I would happily write some tutorials for it. I will do some reading about it and have a go at it.

Ok, just finished a very good tutorial and built my first AJAX app and I'm about to go dump it into one of my new development apps... this is going to be awesome. :)

EDIT: and yeah... the AJAX uses in the latest release of VBulletin are awesome. If anyone wants to check it out, I upgraded my board a few weeks ago: http://forums.entropysink.com

Okay my bit of info was found out on this site in plain view. Scroll to the bottom of the screen on phpfreaks. It says " © Copyright 2002 - 2005 The Web Freaks, INC. | Layout Design: 72dpi" :) LOL. I cant' believe I was the only one to notice that, but then I pay attention to detail.

ah, yes... that's partly because you don't expect to see 2 copyrights on one page. i scrolled far enough to see the IPB copyright and PHPFreaks license, and didn't even think about scrolling further

Yeah, Ryan - 72dpi is an old friend of The Web Freaks. He's done some design jobs for us before and he's a cool guy.

that just goes to show you can't judge anything based on number of posts ;-) lol.

sorry, ryan... my apologies

Ok, this stuff is awesome.... when I do start writing tutorials and answering questions?  :)

i know... when you start merging techs like this, it's phenominal what can be created. i think i'll write a tutorial for a "live" dayplanner or something

Well, seeing as how the site doesn't even have a layout as of right now, I think I'll wait until I have somewhere to post stuff before I start writing tuts.

EDIT: Now I'm going to have to write a PHP class to do all my processing. I guess I could download one, but what would be the fun in that?

I think I remember reading the thread where 72dpi was in the process of designing the new site... I wasn't around when it happened, but I read it.

On-topic, I'm going to play with AJAX ASAIGH. (translates to: as soon as I get home :) )

I'm hearing all this hype about it and can't resist the coolness of the whole idea... imagine not even having to refresh! Yay!

So what is the deal on this? When will we start working on AJAXFreaks??? I am excited.

I think most people, like myself, are taking the time to familiarise themselves with AJAX so that when the site is built we will actually be able to help people. Also, I don't know why but I see AJAXFreaks.com being a dark red colour for some reason, but that is up to phpfreak and the other guys!

About AJAX: I have started to look into it, but after reading and looking through the standard setup (which at first looked scary) of setting up the XMLHttpRequest object in JavaScript it doesnt seem that hard. With the aid of a few tutorials I managed to make a form that when you put in a US zip code it automatically fills the two other input fields with the name of the city and area code as well as a drop down menu that will instantly change the content of a <div> tag.

For people interested, check out these websites:

Let me know of any other sites, guys!

Gast, just a note about those sites:

The phpbuilder tutorial is excellent and very straight-forward, but they use some pretty sloppy javascript that will leave you without a http object if people are spoofing their browser type. The code for creating the http object should be taken from the webpasties site.

I can do my best to contribute to this as well. I've experimented with AJAX a fair bit last fall, and there are so many possibilities. It's just hard convincing people it's value up front. Gmail makes a great place to show AJAX in action, and Yahoo's next web-based email client uses loads of it.

The best introduction tutorial I have seen is the one from apple.

I don't know much about red seeing as how apachefreaks uses red. I would almost say perhaps a type of blue. PHPFreaks has white background, MySQLFreaks has orange, ApahceFreaks has red, LinuxForums has grey, and AJAXFreaks could have blue.

The buzzword is out. AJAX. I've seen it, you've probably seen it, but it's going to be in our faces before we know it! A method to combine practically all of our favorite programming languages together to make some killer web applications.

We registered ajaxfreaks.com about two weeks ago and we're planning to build a site just like phpfreaks.com but for AJAX.

Who's interested in helping build some of the intial tutorials / content? If you are post here and let's plan something out.

We can more than likely just copy phpfreaks, change some of the look and code and have AJAXFreaks.com!  We've got some ideas to tie the communities together, so let us know what you think.

I'm interested to hear what you have to say. I honestly think AJAX is going to be the next BOOM on the internet.

BTW, Eric, I know you said that you could just copy PHPFreaks, but if you are willing to let people help with the design I would be happy to help. Also, wouldnt it be a good idea to use some AJAX on the actual site? :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello, im Execute, and i been a great fan of phpfreaks.com and i have been programming AJAX for some time now, and had to deal with numerous AJAX problems, i own DesignPlanet.biz (It is VERY new just like AJAXfreaks.com) you can check that website out. IT is AN AJAX website, with everything done in AJAX, (almost everything). It shows numerous examples of AJAX, and i make tutorials about it too. IF you guys are starting

AJAXfreaks.com i would love to write tutorials for you guys with the experience i have, however I would appreciate some affiliate links or "sponsor" type things in AJAXfreaks, and would write a whole bunch of tutorials about AJAX, including uploading, POST, GET, iframe, and many other AJAX related issues :D

Tell me if you're interested :D
