I am writing a php code to perform operations on a database. I want to clear all entries in the table before I start modifying it.

The line of code i have to perform that deletion is not workin. Can any body tell me what wrong?

$result = mysql_query("DELETE * FROM sales_matrix_new WHERE (row_id =$j_counter AND col_id =$k_counter)");

You either want to clear ALL entries in the table, or you want to clear SOME with a where clause. Which is it?

DELETE does not allow column names or *. You delete the whole row.

If you were checking for errors it would help.
