I would prefer a different colour or a simple white background.As for the image in the main body (text area) - I try to keep these images on the right (rather than on the left as you have it) so people read and see the text first. Plain black would look better IMO.I also agree that the news section is to prominent. Consider the lighter blue for the title and date headers. To much height on that perticular header too.
