  1. Yes, Yahoo is a PHP based site.  Google uses a combination of Python, C/C++, and a language of their own.  Most companies like google will have developers who make their own private web language. I'll try to find the article again that says what languages GOOGLE uses.

  2. Is leeching done via sockets...assuming their using PHP? We can almost assume that since this is a PHP site and if they want our content they are highly more possible to be using PHP. So if so, can you block sockets? Or maybe an HTTPS? i've never looked much into leeching.

  3. Actually, there is a way to stop content leeching. I don't know how, and it is going to mean that all of phpfreaks will need re-programming. In fact, there are one or two people here who I'm going to get in contact with and see if they want to do a small phpfreaks overhaul.  :-/

  4. Actually, he is right.  It was a test to see what your ability in dealing with the unexpected are, how quickly you can solve such a problem, and to get an idea of your PHP skills at the same time.  So, taking that into account, and the fact that you didn't get the job because of it, I would say you failed.

  5. No problem.  I know your looking for something basic but I would really consider a vps.  You can even use the Live Chat option on that site i gave you, during business hours, and talk to a rep. about any questions or concerns you might have.

  6. Okay, I'm going to provide the link I always provide, but you're more than welcome to shop around. It is the point i'm trying to get across:

    http://www.serverpowered.com/vps.php

If you can swing for it, get yourself a VPS.  From there, install whatever hosting panel you like, ZPanel is light and easy, and do reselling hosting from your VPS.  You handle all sales, you handle all packages, you have control of your server, nameservers, mail servers, etc.

With reseller accounts you have to be stuck with their versions of software, if they upgrade their software you don't have a choice and it could break client sites, you don't have control of the mail or nameservers, etc.

You really lose a lot of your control if you go reseller account over vps. This is something you think you have figured out but that you might want to really really consider before you buy.

Also consider the fact that, apart from hardware, you have total control over server failure.  If something happens with the server and you have a reseller you have to wait for the host to fix it (restart a service, reboot server, etc.)  With a vps anything that goes wrong, with the exception of hardware, is totally fixable by you.

  7. It would actually be an SMS server on the site.  Of course you could always set up a mail server, stick a perl script in your mail handler, and when people reply to the text message it send it to an email.  But, naturally, some phones won't send to an email address.  Your best bet is probably an SMS server.

  8. it is part of webhostfreaks and serverpowered, but it still costs Eric money. I mean look at it this way.  The hosting/servers that he puts towards PHPFreaks is servers/hosting that he can't put towards clients who pay money.  Therefore, he has given us the best he can, but you can only put so much into a community.  Also consider that the mysql server only goes down in transition hours, that is hours when people on one side of the world are just about to go to bed right as people on the other side are just waking up.  You got both sides of the world hitting the servers at around the same time, for about a 1-2 hour time span.

  9. On this site?  That isn't the server going down. He have a limited number of mysql connections and what your seeing is the result of more people on the site than our mysql server has connections for.  We could raise the resources, but that costs money we don't have. But if you would like to donate for a server upgrade, I'm sure Eric would be happy to do so.  :-\

Also, consider that this question has been asked in the @PHPFreaks board at least three times that I know of. Always the same question, always the same answer.

  10.

there are more reasons then that, but certainly four should be enough to make you feel like an ass.

I am very sorry if I annoyed you or if I spoke straight out truth. Because its true, no one will find that form useful. I wouldn't. I email on computer instead of texting lol. And when I have a cellphone I text. LOL

Anyway, the only time I think the form would be useful if it was combined by a site that is already popular and would have the right demographics. It will be hard getting ppl to use that. It just isn't easy to get the word out, and its not a stand alone idea. You can't create a thriving business with a "form." - unless its supplement.

Argue as much as your heart desires. I know enough buisness to know that ain't going to work.

Firstly, I would just like to say to the topic starter that the form has a bit of trouble displaying on my cell phone. Probably from the AJAX, but I could be wrong. Also, could you add Alltel to the list?  Here is the messaging server: 10DigitPhoneNumber@message.alltel.com  Unless you are using your own SMS server, which then I give you props.

Secondly, take my sister for example. She can browse the internet on her phone and it is like making a phone call. So on unlimited nights and weekends it is free. However, it costs her to text message. So this service is great for her, because she can navigate her phone browser to it.

Third, true you can use your cellphone, but I'm sure you have a text plan.  Some people DON'T have a text plan.

Fourth, he isn't trying to start a thriving business that I can see. He simply got bored and created a web form to send free text messages from.  Personally, I think this form would be great for internet use. I can send my friends a text from my computer.  Saves me a text and I know that they will get the answer.

Last, is your last little sentence. You obviously don't know enough business to know this isn't going to work. If he uses the right SEO tools (i'm sure he will use google instead of asking in the misc board), does some free link exchange, and just sticks with it it might become pretty popular.

On a side note to the topic-starter:  You might want to add an optional return number.  Just a place that people who send from their computer can enter in their cell number so friends can reply and it go to their phone. Just a thought.

  11. You need to learn some stuff to, don't say too much when this is more than enough:

    "JUST FU**ING GOOGLE IT!"

okay, dude! seriously!?  Okay, a bit of advice! Don't piss people off when they try to help you. I'm fairly sure that any senior member that sees this topic now has you blacklisted and from now on i bet a lot of your answers will be: just fucking google it!
