acidglitter
My computer has been really weird the last few days. My internet connection has been ridiculous and slow. Today especially. I'll have something playing in iTunes and try to go to a webpage, and the page will take forever to load, and while its loading my music will start skipping and freaking out. Is there something wrong with my computer??

Mchl
Ask your ISP if there are any problems with the line
ardyandkari
cable??? dsl??? dialup??? lets get specific here... if you have cable, they could be doing maintenance on the line. we have cable here and they do something at least once a month to screw up the connection...also, you share bandwidth with your neighbors with cable, so if everyone is doing something at once that eats up a lot of bandwidth, you're stuck. dont know much about dsl...never used it...you dont have to worry about your neighbors with dsl though, because (as far as i know) you dont share bandwidth with neighbors. if you have dialup...stop... also, download a free antivirus and ad-ware remover. i use avg and lavasoft adaware. scan for viruses and adware. that might help... acidglitter
i have qwest dsl. and i have avg and it does a scan everyday, so i seem to be okay with that.. it just worries me that a site loading slowly would even affect another program on my computer
Daniel0
also, download a free antivirus and ad-ware remover. i use avg and lavasoft adaware. Waste of system resources. I don't run that and I haven't got any problem at all. Just don't click everything you see and don't use IE and then you'll be perfectly fine. ardyandkari
i have a wife and daughter who will use the computer sometimes, so i tend to get gummed up once in a while...
corbin
Based on my family's computer habits, most viruses come from 4 places: -P2P network stuff (Limewire, Bearshare, so on) -Torrents -Fake emails -Porn So, viruses are pretty easy to avoid. I, like Daniel, don't use anti virus software. Well, I have AVG installed, but it's not running.

I, like Daniel, don't use anti virus software. Well, I have AVG installed, but it's not running. 100% agreed. When I had have a PC I never ran anti-v programs, the rare defrag, and I only had to re-install once in 5 years. Just be careful what you do, and as for your wife and daughter I don't know what to tell ya. This is my comp, and only mine. Like daniel said, FF wouldn't hurt. Porn is one of the bigger issues with people I know for their PCs. Hard to explain why it bothers me, but it's frustrating when people try to argue that they are fine if they run their AV programs after their porn-spree. While it's partly true, it wouldn't be necessary if you didn't download the crap. It just adds insult to injury. *shrug* They just can't control themselves. And whatever you do, never use "SpyBot", just a warning , when i first got my comp many years back, my dad (semi-computer retarded) installed that piece of shit on it, and it has to be one of the single most annoying programs out there. Every time I think about the little pop-up messages from it I want to rip out my hair. Never let him do that again. What's the most annoying AV program you guys have had the displeasure of experiencing?
corbin
Sounds like TeaTimer was enabled in SpyBot. SpyBot is what I usually use on friend's/family member's computers, along with AVG and some other random stuff (well, I do a lot of it manually just by reading the registry and what not). 100% agree with the porn thing. That would be like saying, "It's fine to shoot my self in the leg as long as they can fix it."
asmith
can't agree more. I've been working at my pc for 10 years, and I never ever used 1 single anti-virus program. A few months ago i started using spybot, only to check what programs try to add to my registry when installing.
