The Little Guy
I want to use these stars, but I am not sure if the color scheme is OK or not. I would like it to go from cold (left) to hot (right). What do you think of my color choice? Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/ Share on other sites

The Little Guy
And what exactly are these for...? They are for my rating system. In action: http://beta.phpsnips.com/snippet.php?id=70 cold = 1 star hot = 5 stars Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780460 Share on other sites

The Little Guy
OK, right now they are 46x46 px individual stars. So, maybe half the size? I'm thinking that I should make them: - Dark blue - Light blue - red blue (not sure what color this would be) - Light red - Dark red Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780594 Share on other sites
Maq
That seems like a reasonable size. As for color, you should do dark to light, IMO. Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780597 Share on other sites
The Little Guy
That seems like a reasonable size. What? you just said they were too big... As for color, you should do dark to light, IMO. dark to light as in one hue such as blue or red, or dark blue to light red? Maq
What? you just said they were too big... I know, you just suggested cutting them to half the size... dark to light as in one hue such as blue or red, or dark blue to light red? When I think about cold I think about dark colors, and when I think about hot I think about light florescent colors. I would do something like: dark blue light blue yellow orange red or I found this color spectrum looking thing on google images: http://www.rockware.com/rockworks/revisions/continuous_rose_01.png Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780629 Share on other sites

Granted, I'm no colour expert. just click your address bar and hit enter (not refresh) - it's a hotlinking protection (sees where you referring from) Honestly, I'd stick with gold stars. Its tried and true, but if you want color do something more exciting and vibrant Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780638 Share on other sites

The Little Guy
OK, I updated the image, (OP) What do you think? Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780645 Share on other sites
nrg_alpha
On the note of gold stars, you can't go wrong to be sure. I was actually contemplating making a ranking system to include on my site's homepage. I temporarily enabled the star display if you're interested in seeing what I was getting at from a visual standpoint. This derived from when I was doing another site mockup and created these stars (which worked out well IMO). Maq
EDIT: Nevermind, there is a link to the site... I really like those stars, but it also depends on what the style of his website looks like and if there is any kind of theme or look to it. nrg_alpha
OK, I updated the image, (OP) What do you think? Definitely more colourful / energetic to be sure. Beats the older versions... I would consider looking up some free star clipart (perhaps a smaller star that is more crisp and stylized. I'm not personally too fond of the extremely thick bevel effect). nrg_alpha
You're absolutely right, Maq. Style certainly plays a large part to be sure. One star does not fit all, that's for sure. Heck you don't even have to use stars! here are some examples (just a quick google): http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gd-star-rating/screenshot-6.png http://www.econsultant.com/images/wordpress-plugin-post-star-rating.jpg http://www.webresourcesdepot.com/wp-content/uploads/image/mootools-star-rating.gif Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780662 Share on other sites
The Little Guy
SO, I see the bevel should be removed. All vote yes? If so, what should I replace the bevel with? I don't want the flat. nrg_alpha
Not suggesting the removal of the bevel effect.. but perhaps making it smaller with crisper edges.. then again, reflecting back on Maq's comment, depends on the look of the site. When I see those stars, I think of a cartoon website (given the 'fluffiness' of the bevel and star shape). This may or may not work. I'm just saying I'm personally not a fan of that look (this is of course, purely subjective... I tend to lean towards crisp sharp images). The Little Guy
How about now? I softened the bevel. Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/148613-ok-stars/#findComment-780676 Share on other sites
nrg_alpha
I like it better than before to be sure. I did this mockup. The one trick you can do as far as colours going from cool to warm/hot is to have some grey stars as your base on a white background, then use a gradient as a layer on top of those grey stars, and set the gradient layer's rendering mode to 'color' (I am assuming the use of photoshop here, as that's all I use for image editing purposes). What you are left with is a smooth gradient transitioning within the stars from one end of the spectrum to the other. Since the layer containing the gradient is set to 'color', it has no effect on pure white. Thus, only the stars get 'colorized' (the colours I used in the screenshot is not necessarily what I am proposing.. rather the technique / idea behind it. Feel free to tweak / play around if you decide to go this route and see what colour gradient appeals to you). Just some food for thought... I just picked a star look that I personally like (and you can use if you want it). But again, it is indeed all subjective to be sure. Doesn't mean my opinion is right and others are wrong...just my personal 2 cents in a pond of millions.
