What? you just said they were too big...

I know, you just suggested cutting them to half the size...

dark to light as in one hue such as blue or red, or dark blue to light red?

When I think about cold I think about dark colors, and when I think about hot I think about light florescent colors.  I would do something like:

dark blue

light blue

yellow

orange

red

or I found this color spectrum looking thing on google images:

That link won't allow me to see the content. I get this instead:

You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected. You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server.

I have found this link on warm vs cool colours. Granted, I'm no colour expert.

just click your address bar and hit enter (not refresh) - it's a hotlinking protection (sees where you referring from)

Honestly, I'd stick with gold stars. Its tried and true,  but if you want color do something more exciting and vibrant

On the note of gold stars, you can't go wrong to be sure. I was actually contemplating making a ranking system to include on my site's homepage. I temporarily enabled the star display if you're interested in seeing what I was getting at from a visual standpoint. This derived from when I was doing another site mockup and created these stars (which worked out well IMO).

OK, I updated the image, (OP) What do you think?

Definitely more colourful / energetic to be sure. Beats the older versions... I would consider looking up some free star clipart (perhaps a smaller star that is more crisp and stylized. I'm not personally too fond of the extremely thick bevel effect).

I really like those stars, but it also depends on what the style of his website looks like and if there is any kind of theme or look to it.

100% agree with that statement (both liking + style and placement)

colorful/energetic - use more vibrant colors instead of pastel colors. Heck you don't even have to use stars!

here are some examples (just a quick google):

Not suggesting the removal of the bevel effect.. but perhaps making it smaller with crisper edges.. then again, reflecting back on Maq's comment, depends on the look of the site. When I see those stars, I think of a cartoon website (given the 'fluffiness' of the bevel and star shape). This may or may not work. I'm just saying I'm personally not a fan of that look (this is of course, purely subjective... I tend to lean towards crisp sharp images).

I like it better than before to be sure.

I did this mockup. The one trick you can do as far as colours going from cool to warm/hot is to have some grey stars as your base on a white background, then use a gradient as a layer on top of those grey stars, and set the gradient layer's rendering mode to 'color' (I am assuming the use of photoshop here, as that's all I use for image editing purposes). What you are left with is a smooth gradient transitioning within the stars from one end of the spectrum to the other. Since the layer containing the gradient is set to 'color', it has no effect on pure white. Thus, only the stars get 'colorized' (the colours I used in the screenshot is not necessarily what I am proposing.. rather the technique / idea behind it. Feel free to tweak  / play around if you decide to go this route and see what colour gradient appeals to you).

Just some food for thought... I just picked a star look that I personally like (and you can use if you want it). But again, it is indeed all subjective to be sure. Doesn't mean my opinion is right and others are wrong...just my personal 2 cents in a pond of millions.
